You know – in a million years, I never thought I would be this upset about a store closing….
But today I stopped in to my local Acme store and found out that they will be closing in 2 months.
Acme…my shopping love…my all-time favorite store. It seems that I have been almost on an unconscious (and unpaid) “mission” to prove to my readers that the best deals can be found at Acme. Sure, I have had a few issues at my store (I actually ended up “going ballistic” about 2 specific cashiers to corporate after 2 years of them treating me and other couponers like doggie-doo)….but the bottom line is that my local Acme was staffed with the most wonderful and helpful employees. They are incredibly coupon-friendly and just…well…NICE!
So what does this mean for Moms Need to Know? Well, I DO have another Acme that is about 10 miles from me (actually, I have 2, but I heard the other one might be closing as well). With any luck, I can build up a rapport with that one and schedule my weekly errands to be near them and continue to get the ads early in order to post the deals ASAP (I assume once the local store closes, I won’t get the ads in my weekly mail any longer).
What does this mean for the employees of My Beloved Acme? Some of them will undoubtedly go to the store across the street. They were actually laughing about it.
You see, Acme continues to have the best coupon policy in the Philadelphia area. How long until THAT STORE starts to get annoyed by all the couponers splitting their transactions because THAT STORE only doubles one-like coupon per transaction? (of course, there is the possibility that THAT STORE may change their local policy…they DO double more than one like-coupon in others areas!)
Hennyway – back to My Beloved Acme….
To all the employees who I have known for the past several years…I will miss you. I hope that you find gainful employment soon. Thank you for always (well, except 2 of you) treating me like a valued customer and being THRILLED when you saw how much I was getting for free. Thank you for treating Brad so nicely when I sent him in to get the ad for the following week on a Tuesday or Wednesday. And thank you for a wonderful pharmacy with employees who would spend the time to explain every possible side effect (even though there was that one prescription where you failed to tell me “May cause drowsiness” also means “May Get You Stoned Out of Your Gourd!”)
Thank you for everything.
And please know that, until the day you close, you will get every grocery dollar that I spend.

Eeek! I hope this isn’t a trend!! I really like Acme! Can you tell me which store you shop at? (You can email me if you like, I’m totally not a stalker! LOL Just another Philly couponer!)

We have heard rumors for years that our Acme would close. I am sorry you are losing your store.
OMG! I am so sorry for your loss! I LOVE my Acme! What town is your Acme in? I am down in Newtown Square and I can lend you mine! lol
Oh – I have been to the Newtown Square store and that one is BEAUTIFUL!
I have to say, I have enjoyed having all of my grocery shopping less than 2 miles away from me, but I am SO loyal to Acme (and…ahem…their coupon policy), that I can see myself scheduling my shopping trips for a Tuesday or Wednesday at a store that is 15 miles away…just so I can get the good deals AND a copy of the upcoming ad
what?? r u talking about the “newer” one????
Oh no
It took me a while to warm up to that store (after the main street store closed) but once I did I loved it! We have since moved and I would still make a pit stop to that store if I was driving by. how sad….
Oh no, now I’m panic too! I think you are in my area, but I’m now afraid that it is my store that is closing! I haven’t been there yet this week, but was there a sign?? (Do you think it’s because I got too many good deals, I would trade then to keep my store!!)
I assume this is the Acme in Royersford on Ridge Pike? I can’t say I’m really surprised as there was never anyone in there when I’ve been in there. I do wish they would open one closer to Pottstown to give Giant more of a run for their money!
I thought the Acme in Royersford just opened in the past two years? I don’t think it is that one? I moved from that area 5 years ago, before the metropolis of stores took over.
yep – it’s the Acme in Royersford/Limerick
Oh NO! I feel bad for 2 reasons. 1 being, you are losing your store. I don’t know what I would do without mine. 2 – I’m pretty sure the “acme 10 miles away” is my store! Ugghh. I am now 36 and started couponing after working as a cashier at a grocery store almost 20 years ago. Much like you, I have this down to a science. I AM the “coupon lady” at my store. They are wonderful people and treat you with respect. If you need hlp with your deals list, I could offer help. It takes me about 5 minutes to spot the deals for the week, remember the coupons in circulation and make my list.
I found out today that mine is closing, too! (Fallston, MD) About a mile away a super Walmart will be opening up in the near future.
Meh! SuperWalmart?
You couldn’t PAY me to shop there!
I don’t know, they are tempting me with their opening up to couponers lately. Did you know they now take competitor’s coupons? Now if they would only double. . . wishful thinking huh
WalMart posted that the competitors coupon thing was an ad misprint – yet another reason I won’t shop there.
My mom just retired from Acme after 38 years of service and then found out today that 6 stores in our “district” are closing, including the Acme I shop at most often! I was so shocked! It is the newer store too, but my mom seems to think that may have something to do with the fact that the newer store is leasing the property whereas her store owns the building and property they are on. So strange, because the little tiny store closest to me is NOT closing, again probably because they own the building, but it does not compare to my fave Acme.
SO SAD!
OMG I have been on vacation – so I haven’t been in any grocery store in like 2 weeks – but I feel like I could PUKE right now!!!!
This is soooo not fair! I hate that store across the street, I have spent less then $20 there in the last year!
ACME closed the store the next town over last year, and held the lease so no other grocery store could go in, now this.
I agree – other then 2 people – the staff at this store is the absolute best.
2 are closing by me. Moorestown (the OEN AND ONLY Acme in Moorestown) and Ciniminson NJ. I guess Wegmans was too much for them. but i always went to acme first. shame.
I did some probbing around the net – looks like it’s more then our store that is closing. Looks like it is:
Limerick, PA
Millville, NJ
Fallston, MD
Cinnaminson, NJ
Moorestown, NJ
Wayne, PA

and they will be closed by the end of Feb
I too use Acme (in Warminster, Bucks county) for my grocery shopping. Could you please give me a brief explanation of their coupon policy? I’ve been trying to do some research online but I’m having major difficulty finding reliable information. Thanks for your help, I am a total newbie and need all the help I can get!
Hi Mindi!
WOW….and I agree with you 100%! I had a really rough time with a particular gentlemen cashier at our Acme and he had me in tears. He held up the line behind me to embarass me and spread “all” the coupons I gave him on the conveyor belt to inspect each one for accuracy. There was an instore coupon for oatmeal that I thought I could stack with a manufacturer’s one and that led him to treat me with complete disrespect the rest of the transaction. People behind me were also upset with him and I did go to management and complain. Later I got a phone call from another manager who said I would get an apology and he personally invited me back to the store. I have since seen this person many times and he refuses to look my direction. I also refuse to get in his line and will go the customer service desk if he is the only cashier open. Having said this……the other acme employees are soooooo nice and helpful. I hope they find employers who appreciate them! This is sad news indeed and it is VERY frustrating with the “other” store causing multiple transactions!
Thanks for letting us know! Hopefully the “other” store will become more friendly!
Mel
Do you think it might help the employee’s that we value so very much, if we could write them reference letters of how much they would benefit other stores to hire them? I’m certainly not a fan of any of the other stores in our immediate area, but maybe if they contained some of our favorite employees… Wow! I, like you, never thought I would be upset (really upset!) about a store closing. For us dedicated couponers, this is a real blow.
My condolences for your loss…that really sucks!
I am just so sad about this! I always felt it was a possibility because not enough people use the store, but I really did not want it to happen. I love the employees in the store and I agree with cheryl maybe we could write letters to help them get new jobs. I know there is a front end manager with wavy hair (I think) she is the absolute nicest person. I have called corporate and given her complements before but unfortunately cannot remember her name now.
.-= Gina´s last blog ..I am what I am and its all that I am =-.
Gina – I think that you are talking about Kim…and she is AWESOME!
(although I have a particular love for Josh
)
Oh, I am so sad to here that. Limerick Acme is my favorite, I am in between Lansdale and limerick and would much rather go to Limerick, the staff is so much more friendly at Limerick I think.
Wow, sad to hear that Acme’s are closing. I love Acme, my favorite grocery store.
I shopped the Collegeville store for Years, then moved on to Limerick, I know all the employees there and am really upset !! I can’t believe that Acme is doing this, can we do something to help or is this already a done deal ????
Unfortunately, I think it’s a “done deal”
I was also heart broken when our local Acme closed about 2 years ago.
I, too, am disappointed our new limerick store is closing. I live In c-ville and am upset we already have two huge vacancies from acme and super fresh….and now this. Starting to look scarse out here. I am not a fan of THAT store for many reasons, mainly their coupon policy, but also their ads are different basically for each store in our area (trooper, limerick, royersford, etc), and depending on when I visit a store, it may be after work (trooper), after the gym (limerick), etc, then I need to have different lists. Annoying. The customer service staff at our acme has been wonderful, especially when it’s been my own silly fault I didn’t get catalinas…but they always helped me get it straightened out. They will be missed.
My mother-in-law works for the Collegeville Acme and told me the other day about this. I was devastated! I never used to shop at Acme until you, Mindi, showed me how much I could save there. I have always thought Acme had the highest prices, but over the last year of becoming a couponer, I have realized they also have the best sale prices! I am so sad by this news. The first thing I said to my MIL was “But the employees are so nice!” I told her Acme would lose my business b/c I won’t shop at the Collegeville store. It’s dirty, way too busy, and the employees are nowhere near as nice and helpful as those in Limerick. The management team at Limerick deserves a round of applause for hiring and retaining such wonderful employees and maintaining such a clean and well-stocked store.
Oops, I meant she works at the Trooper store. Collegeville stored closed too.
This is sad. I know its prob not a good time to bring this up..BUT here it goes. When a store closes that generally means a clearance. Any info on deals at the store that is closing?
