The price of being a parent goes up every year thanks to Exxon and friends, and there’s not much anyone can do about it except buy fuel efficient automobiles. But for those of us who aren’t in a position to invest in the latest hybrid, there are some interim steps we can take that will make a difference. I live in a rural part of Maine where fortunately, the school buses are still running. But the price of country living is dear when you start to add up all those errands.

1. Carpool: This one is obvious; parents have been doing it for generations. But consider co-op trips to places other than school. Do the weekly grocery shopping with a neighbor and split the driving duties. Carpooling to work is another obvious choice, but these days if there’s no one living near you who works near your place of business, talk to someone with whom you can connect at a midway point from your home and from theirs. Half a carpool is better than none.

2. Combine errands: Develop a working relationship with a neighbor or two that results in one person going into town for everybody’s errands. You can only do this when everyone knows exactly what they want, but think about all of the trips to the hardware store or pharmacy you make every year, and then imagine what it would be like if you only had to drive for those errands every fourth or fifth time.

3. Take that rack off the roof: If you have a rack for skis in the winter or kayaks in the summer take it off when you’re not using it. Those racks are a permanent drag on the car’s ability to move through air smoothly; use them only when needed.

4. Change the fuel chip: These days the engine is really controlled by computer chips and electronics. At one time you could make your car more powerful by changing the fuel input chip. Now you can “detune” the car to provide for more efficient fuel use at lower speeds while maintaining power at higher speeds.

5. Slow down: This particular suggestion really only has an impact at high speeds, out on the interstate. Of course that’s where the tendency to drive at the same rate as everyone else is most compelling. But the fuel consumption difference between 60 MPH and 75 MPH is substantial. It’s controlling those lifelong habits that is difficult.

Apple iPad 2

The iPad 3 will not feature a significant price drop (if any at all), but one thing is guaranteed — Cupertino’s forthcoming tablet will most certainly bring down the price of refurbished iPad 2s. (As the iPad 2 did for its predecessor.) The Kindle Fire has been Amazon‘s most successful product ever launched. The release of this groundbreaking tablet has, a-hem, ignited a fire among tablet manufacturers as they scramble to match Amazon‘s $199 price tag. For consumers, the competition translates to better tablet bargains in 2012.

Wine

Wine connoisseur extraordinaire, Robert Parker, predicts the coming year to be the “Age of the Buyer” — a prolonged period of time with stable or declining wine prices. With less disposable income, folks have left wines priced at $30 and above untouched on store shelves. So to move stock, retailers are expected to offer more sales and even flash deals on wines. Price is also affected by industry competition, as consumers note the quality-to-price ratio from wines originating in countries like Australia, Argentina, South Africa, and Chile. Aficionados should check out sites like Lot 18 for their boozy offerings.

Home Prices

Despite record-low mortgage interest rates, United States home prices are expected to limp their way into the coming year. In 2011, average home prices across the country were down 3.4% (compared to the same period of August to October, 2010). And with unemployment expected to remain high, 2012 is looking like it will remain a buyer’s market.

Standalone GPS Units with Lifetime Maps

The smarter our phones get, the greater the number of gadgets they’re capable of replacing. And no gadget is as close to extinction as the GPS unit. So it comes as no surprise to see manufacturers slash prices on standalone GPS units with lifetime / live maps. dealnews data shows that in 2011, units that were once fetching around $160 reached price-lows of just $70.

Prices rise all the time…it’s just an unfortunate fact of life. I just read an article about the things that are almost guaranteed to go up in price this year.

The worst thing? We aren’t talking about items like fur coats, trips to Bermuda and diamonds. We are talking about basics, such as food water and gas! From the article:

Food for Home Preparation

If your grocery bill seemed higher in 2011, you weren’t imagining things. Most retailers have reported that food prices are rising and those increases are being passed along to shoppers. Food costs rose 6% last year and will likely go up at least 2% more in 2012. Increases are likely to affect food eaten at home, rather than restaurants where those costs are easier to absorb when combined with sales of liquor, says Harry Balzer, Chief Industry Analyst for the NPD Group.

Water

Most communities in the United States will face water rate hikes this year, even places that are rich with the natural resource. Water rates in the greater Chicago area will increase by as much as 25% next year, while the parched high desert Denver market is set to rise an additional 5.5%. Like the above-mentioned fees, this increase is mostly a result of cities needing to increase revenue to balance their budgets.

Gas

Fuel prices began inching up just before the holidays, and 2012 is looking to be another budget-breaking year at the pump, with prices once again topping $4 per gallon.

Domestic and International Airfare

Greater demand and fewer available airline seats will likely lead to higher ticket prices for flights next year. American Express predicts prices within North America will increase up to 5% for economy seating, depending on the length of the flight, and up to 7% in business class. Things look more bleak for European travel. A new “green tax” implemented by the EU is aimed at reducing emissions, and it will levy a fee of roughly $15 per passenger, each way, for flights to the U.S. Fees on shorter flights within the EU will be taxed slightly less.

Shipping

Unfortunately for avid online shoppers, the U.S. Postal Service will raise rates by an average of 4.6% next year, while both FedEx and UPS are hiking small package rates by 4.9%. Personal shipping will certainly cost more and it’s anybody’s guess how long retailers can continue the ubiquitous free shipping offers as rates rise.

Mobile Device Data Plans

Data plans in the past have had a tendency to decline, but as carriers build out 4G services, and move away from unlimited plans, data is set to become more expensive in 2012, according to Ross Rubin, Executive Director of Connected Intelligence at the NPD Group.

About a year ago, a friend of mine convinced me on the wonderful properties of coconut oil. I was skeptical (especially since Brad still blamed her for that whole “organic salsa incident”), but after a year of using coconut oil, I am a HUGE fan!

So why should you use coconut oil?

• The most amazing hand, foot and cuticle treatment you can ever imagine!
• The winter have your lips chapped? Switch out the Blistex for coconut oil…you won’t be sorry!
• and speaking of chapped lips in winter…there is the smell.  The smell of coconut in winter is just awesomeness!
• Stove top popcorn popped in coconut oil and then just a dab of melted butter? Pure Heaven!
• Have problems with frizzy hair? Rub a little between your palms and run it through your hair (avoiding the roots) and watch the frizziness be tamed!
• Waterproof eye makeup remover: use a tissue and a quick swipe and you can take it all off
• Cooking: Use 1 cup to 1 cup ratio when replacing other oils/butter in recipes with coconut oil.
• Eggs fried in coconut oil is pure HEAVEN!
• Shave Prep: rub coconut oil on the area to be shaved and enjoy a cleaner shave!

I just wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you are enjoying this day with friends and family.

I have tried to post a few deals that came up today and I know that I missed a bunch, but this is one of the few days of the year that I allow this site to be completely “back burner”.  Thanksgiving has always been an extra special holiday for my family and this is the first holiday since the untimely death of a beloved family member this past summer.  Family First!

I have been honored to be a Savings.com DealPro since October of 2009.  This week,I am attending the Save Up 2011 Conference with a bunch of bloggers- we are learning from each other a variety of ways to make our websites more useful and a better experience for you.

This Summer, Savings.com announced their goal to save America $1 Billion in 1 year.  To that end, they have already helped people to save over $21 Million.  You can join the challenge and pledge to save money right on the Moms Need To Know Facebook Fan page!

I have shared my story so many times, but for those of you who are new to Moms Need To Know, let me give you a short idea of how I started saving so much money.

I grew up in the 1980s – the Decade of Excess.  As a teenager, it was wonderful because my parents would just hand me a credit card and let me go shopping.  Money was never an issue and it was never something that I real thought about.

Then I got moved out, got married and had to learn how to live on my OWN income, which was significantly less than what my parents made. For a while, this was not that big of an issue because Brad and I lived in a small condo, both had jobs and we didn’t have children.

In May of 2001, my son Thomas was born and I didn’t know much about being a mom, but I knew that I wanted to stay home to do it.  If that was going to happen, we had to cut our costs significantly!

I had always used coupons when I was doing the grocery shopping, but now I “stepped it up” quite a bit. It was also around this time that coupon codes for online shopping became more widely available.  I got intense about saving money and by living a very simple life combined with saving money at the grocery store and online, we were able to make it through.

These days, saving money is not as big of a need as it used to be, but I have been doing it so long, I can’t imagine ever going back to paying retail (or even just “”merely wholesale”).  It’s just not something that I have any desire to do!

Boudreaux’s product $1/1:  we switched to this brand with my last child and I can honestly say that it worked better for us than any other brand.  There is a travel size that is often at Target that is priced at $1.  Use this coupon to get it free!

SeaPak PopCorn Shrimp Buy one 20oz or larger Get $5.00 off popcorn fish 22oz:  This isn’t technically a Buy One Free coupon and Seapak seems to go on sale BOGO at my stores fairly often.  Combine a good sale with this coupon and you could likely pick up some cheap popcorn shrimp/fish

:: RedPlum Coupons

Hatfield Ham Steak $1/1: these go on sale for $2.50 all the time

Listerine coupons: while Listerine coupons have a fairly long expiration date, they really only put them out 4-5 times per year.Grab them while you can (if you need them)

I get 3 copies of the paper delivered each week that gives me the “good” SmartSource and get the RedPlum in the mail each week. I typically head to the store to buy extra copies of the paper that carries the Redplum on Sunday, but I am underwhelmed by the coupons this week and just sticking to what has been delivered to my house.

Eggland’s Best Save $.50/1 eggs (3/31/12): this is usually a $0.35/1 coupon. Thanks to Egglands Best coupons (and their long expiration date), I can pretty much stick to buying these, as the price is usually the same as (or cheaper) than store-brand eggs after doubled coupon!

Little Remedies Save $1/1 product (11/30): we will start seeing more and more “cold & flu” deals at the Drug Stores

Reynolds Save $.25/2 baking cups (1/31/12): I haven’t seen a coupon for these in a LONG time!

Reynolds Save $.50/1 parchment paper (11/30): I use this stuff about 3 times a week – LOVE that we are back in to “baking season” and there are coupons for it!

Trojan Save $1/1 10ct+ condom product (1/2/12): well – if you NEED these, this is a rare coupon!

My friend (and fellow Savings.com Dealpro) Jen of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam got angry last week.….and for good reason.

You see, it seems that Goodwill wanted to open a store just a few miles from her home, and there was a very vocal opposition to the new store.  Some of it had to do with increased traffic, over-comercialization of the neighborhood, property values, etc.  But when all that was said and done, there was another reason:

“They don’t want the type of people they believe Goodwill would attract to their neighborhood.”

In about 3 weeks, Jen and I will be “walking the red carpet” at an event in New York City together. I will likely be wearing a dress that cost me  way too much money. She will be wearing either her $2 or her $5 Thrift store dress – and she will look STUNNING!

Who are “the type of people that Goodwill attracts”?

They are rich, they are poor, they are old and they are young.  Some will shop at Goodwill because it is all they can afford.  Some will shop at Goodwill because they can afford more, buy don’t want to pay more. Some shop at thrift stores because of the environmental benefit of recycling clothing. And some shop there for the thrill of possibly “finding a treasure”.

No matter what reason a person has for shopping at thrift stores, nobody should look down on them for shopping at thrift stores.  and frankly, I am shocked that the reporter was able to find people so snobby and classless as do actually SAY “We don’t want THOSE people”.

Jen is one of THOSE people that shops at Goodwill.  So I guess “Those People” means someone who is frugal, classy, generous of heart, smart and beautiful.  The people that the interviewer talked to could take a lesson from Jen!

Further, this week sees the return of the nemesis of every “sane coupon user”. From the teaser for Season 2 of Extreme Couponing, season 2 promises to be just as over-the-top and unrealistic as Season 1. If you thought people gave you grief before for using your coupons, it will likely get worse very soon.

Hold your head high. Never be ashamed that you are saving money. As long as you are using coupons responsibly, let any comments people may make to you roll right off your back.

And frankly? Anyone who looks down on me (or you) for saving money is not somebody I care to know anyway!
