What can I say about Lands’ End? They have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.  From the classic clothing styles to their signature tote bags (I have about 7 of them and use them for everything from a laptop bag to a beach bag to a grocery bag!), there is something for everyone on their site.

As my local Readers know, I am from the Philadelphia area.  It was only in the last 5 years or so that we had a Cracker Barrel in this area.  But, my sister moved to Florida for a few years and one of the highlights of our drive to see her was stopping at Cracker Barrel stores along I-95 on the way to her house.  I STILL remember the first time I tasted Fried Apples.  It was Heaven in my mouth!

Fast forward a few years and we are in Indiana for a family reunion, staying at a hotel within spitting distance of a Cracker Barrel. I have my 4 year old and my 2 year old with me.  I turn to Brad and say “I don’t care if there is a breakfast in the lobby – there is a CRACKER BARREL out my window!  I want grits and fried apples!”  Of course this was on a Saturday morning, so we spent  20 minutes waiting for our table and wandering around the gift shop…and we bought some items that, 6 years later, still bring my kids TONS of enjoyment!

If you’re looking for a present under $20 for Christmas, you have to check out Cracker Barrel’s Great Gifts (they even offer free gift wrap).  Cracker Barrel sent us some classic great gifts that we love.  The wood train set, the wood works airplane, and a sock monkey hat.  Once again, everything doesn’t have to be powered by batteries!  The classic wood train set comes with a track, train cars and other accessories.  The train cars attach by magnets on either end which make them fun to move around!  

Butterflies Dolls are a line of 8 dolls that are made exclusively for the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.  They each have their own personality and name!  The Butterflies are powered by your child’s imagination rather than batteries which helps them think more creatively.  Each doll comes with her own outfit and you can purchase more clothes separately.  Their hair already comes in the doll’s favorite hairstyle, so if your child likes to do her doll’s hair, this doll may not be the best for that.  However, you can take all of their hair accessories out and put them in differently.

To help these dolls feel even more life-like, you can buy extra accessories and furniture.  We received the utensil set, the doll chef hat & apron, Butterflies plush cupcake and a Butterflies tote.  These accessories are fun because they help make your child’s Butterflies doll seem even more realistic.  She can cook with your child, dress up with your child – and do anything she can imagine!

I would like to tell you that Elizabeth has been playing with these dolls and LOVING them, but the truth is?  I took one look at them and knew that they were going to be a “home run” for Christmas.  They are hidden in the Santa area right now. Elizabeth is going to go out of her MIND on Christmas!

I recently had the opportunity to get together with some of my favorite Philly Bloggers as part of a campaign with Lawry’s.  We are participating in a national recipe contest as “Team Philly” and our challenge was to come up with some new recipes for a “Holiday Dinner”.  Seeing as it is still summer and we are in the heart of Grilling Season, we decided to design a couples-themed Labor Day party!

The requirements were to come up with an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert.  However, since this was also a get together with some of my favorite Philly Bloggers, we decided to go above and beyond and have a little extra fun!

The menu:

Cheesy Baked Artichoke Dip

Pineapple Salsa

Cedar Plank Salmon with Grilled Vegetables

Grilled Corn – see recipe below

Sweet and Spicy Peaches and Strawberries – see recipe below

Lawry’s Sweet and Seasoned Surprise – see recipe below

I have to admit, the thought of creating a dessert and our little “add-on” of a cocktail was a little strange to me.  When I think of Lawry’s, “sweet” is not a word that typically comes to mind.  I was pleasantly surprised by the Peaches & Strawberries and BLOWN AWAY by our cocktail!

Corn on the Cob

• Remove outer layers of corn husks
• Soak corn in cold water for 20 minutes
• peel back husks and dribble olive oil and shake on Lawry’s seasoned salt
• push corn husks back around cob and grill for 20-40 minutes, turning every now and again
• remove corn and serve

Sweet and Spicy Strawberries and Peaches

• 1 lb strawberries
• 3 fresh local peaches
• 1 tbsp sugar
• ½ cup water
• 1 tbsp Lawry’s Balsamic Vinegar Marinade

1. cut tops of strawberries and slice peaches into slices
2. marinade in water, marinade, and sugar
3. place in foil and grill for 5-6 minutes
4. serve with vanilla ice cream or greek yogurt

Lawry’s Sweet & Seasoned Surprise

• 2 oz tequila
• 2 ½ teaspoon sugar
• ½ cup frozen strawberries
• 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
• 1/2 cup frozen peaches
• Juice of ½ Lemon

1. Lawry’s seasoned pepper
2. Mix above in a blender.
3. Pour some Seasoned Pepper on a plate
4. Wet Margarita glass with a lemon and dip in Lawry’s seasoning
5. Enjoy this salty and sweet drink!

I really like that Michael Angelo’s products are able to capture real ingredients into their Entrees without adding additional ingredients that are near impossible to pronounce.

I also love that their entrees are shipped to stores within 36 hours of being made. This eliminates being warehoused in a freezer for who knows how long and giving the product a freezer after taste! And there are no artificial colors, flavors, fillers or chemical preservatives in any of their products. Just check out the ingredients for their Chicken Parmesan!

If you are like me, the kids after school activities and sports (not to mention CCD and just trying  to get them to finish their homework) can leave dinner in a time crunch! One of my goals for this fall is to get better organized. This summer has been complete chaos, but Elizabeth starts kindergarten in a few weeks and I am looking forward to the “alone time” to get this house in order. Back when Brad and I were digging ourselves out of debt, I swore that credit cards would never again enter our home….and they didn’t for almost a year after we paid off everything but the house.  But what I learned was that, for us at least, it wasn’t the credit card that was the problem….it was the discipline to live within our means.

Columbian Steak With Tomatoes, Onion & Cumin

I made this recipe the other night for my family. It was a new (to me) recipe and SO simple!

The ingredients?

• 2 lb Top Round Sirloin, sliced very thin (hint: place in freezer for 30 minutes before slicing to make the slicing easier)
• Extra Virgin Olive Oil
• 2 medium yellow onions
• 2 large beefsteak tomatoes or 6 tomatoes on the vine
• 3 cloves fresh garlic finely minced or put through a garlic press
• Cumin to taste ( I used about 4 tablespoons total)
• Salt to taste
• Jasmine rice, cooked according to package directions (optional)

HP has entered the tablet market with a bang…with the HP Touchpad.  I have had the opportunity to use the HP Touchpad and have absolutely fallen in love with it!.

The HP Touchpad is the first tablet to run on WebOs.  If you have a Palm or a PalmPre, you are familiar with WebOS hopefully find it as easy and as intuitive as I do.  As a matter of fact, you can even sync your Palm or PalmPre with the Touchpad.

A few things that I love about the HP Touchpad:

The “card system”.  I absolutely adore that I can have multiple windows open at once, including multiple email accounts. With just a quick finger swipe, I can scroll between my open applications, including Twitter, Facebook, my different email accounts, the internet, my calendar and even Angry Birds!  I don’t have to close out 1 application to open another. I consider this a fabulous timesaver and a major advantage if you are a multitasker like myself!

The Touchpad’s WebOS supports Flash.  This means that, unlike with some other tablets or smartphones, there aren’t elements of websites that you aren’t able to view.  EVERYTHING works!

For Bloggers, there is an App for WordPress that gives you the same functionality as if you were sitting at your laptop.  For me, this is HUGE, as it is so much easier to carry the HP Touchpad around when I need to “work on the go” than lugging my laptop and cord.

The notifications:  rather than have to look at the individual icons for the applications, all of my pending messages (email, Facebook, etc) are right in 1 place as soon as I turn on the Touchpad.

The Facebook and Twitter apps.  They are hands-down better than any other apps that I have seen for tablets and smartphones.  If you use Tweetdeck, the Twitter app (Spaz) for the HP Touchpad is almost exactly the same.  As for Facebook?  I find it much easier to navigate to find what you want than the apps for the iPad or even for my Droid.

We tend to be “electronics junkies” in this house and while Brad has an iPad and the kids love it for playing games and watching videos (they aren’t allowed to use my Touchpad), I find that the Touchpad is the smarter choice for a small businessperson looking to take their business “on the go”.

As a matter of fact, I love my new Touchpad so much that I have already ordered a case and wireless keyboard for it and will probably order the charging station for it within the next month and just keep it constantly set up on my desk as a “2nd laptop”!
