My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 7 Update (Juicing While Sick)

juice-fast

Day 7 of my 10 Day Juice Fast was a rough one for me. Like many areas of the country, there is a nasty cold going around and I woke up feeling horrible. Brad and I have been giving each other the same cold over and over again since the fall, so I knew that it wasn’t because of my juicing…it was just my turn to be miserable. I decided to keep it simple today!

Breakfast:

carrot-pineapple

1 pineapple, 1 lb carrots – this made a TON of juice and was actually a little too sweet for me. I had way too much to drink myself, so I knew that I would be using the leftovers for lunch

Lunch

carrot-pineapple-romaine-kale

leftover juice from breakfast, 1 romaine heart, 4 kale leaves

Dinner – I still was feeling yucky and had still had leftover juice from breakfast & lunch (I’m serious – I must have bought the World’s Juiciest Pineapple!), so I just finished that off and laid down on the sofa with a box of tissues, a glass of water and the remote control…..and was asleep for the night by 7:30pm!

Day 7 thoughts: I don’t know that anything was really different for me on Day 7. Had I not been juice fasting, I probably would have had no appetite anyway (due to being sick). I guess the best part of juicing while sick is that I got some vitamins and nutrients in me that I normally wouldn’t have (typically when I am sick, I hole up on the sofa with a box of Wheat Thins). That is probably why I woke up this morning feeling absolutely fine!

My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 6 Update!

juice-fast

Day 6 of my 10 Day Juice Fast was much easier for me. If you remember, I fell off the wagon a little on Day 5, and I was determined to make it easy on myself and mostly just go with “tried & true” recipes.

Here is what I drank on Day 5

Breakfast
carrot-juice
6 carrots, pinch of ginger

Lunch – I tweaked the recipe for this from The Thrifty Mama to add more spinach. The result was a yummy juice (despite the color)
pumpkin-cherries-spinach
2 cups butternut squash, 1 granny smith apple, 1 pear, 2 cups cherries, 3 handfuls spinach

Dinner – I could drink this every day and be very happy!
Mean Green
The Mean Green! 6 kale leaves, 4 stalks of celery, 2 Granny Smith apples, 1 cucumber, 1/2 lemon, piece of ginger.

Day 6 Thoughts:  For some reason, I thought it would be no problem to make my sons favorite dinner – Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo.  I have a great recipe for it and I was practically drooling as I was making it for dinner.  But I was determined to not have another slip-up and resisted.  It’s probably for the best, as my recipe is VERY fattening!  Oh – and I am down another pound (total weight loss so far – 8 pounds)!

I will be sharing with you my thoughts and what I drank during my my 10 Day Juice Fast and I hope that you find this info helpful!

My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 5 Update (In Which, I Fall Off The Wagon a Little)

juice-fast

Day 5 of my 10-Day Juice Fast was the hardest for me so far. I had a ton of running around to do during the day, I started working on getting my taxes together to meet with the accountant next month and then I had to shuttle my boys back & forth to basketball practice at night. I “fell off the wagon” in 3 ways:

  1. I mismanaged my time and found myself at Wegmans at lunchtime and REALLY needing something in my stomach, so I ended up grabbing a Bolthouse Green Goodness juice. While it is much better than all of the yummy alternatives to be found at Wegmans, it still wasn’t ideal.
  2. Since the kids had basketball practice, I grabbed a take & bake whole wheat pizza while I was at Wegmans and I ended up eating a half a slice (1/16 of the pizza). Sidenote: we buy “Take & Bakes” all the time, but this was the first one that I bought from Wegmans…NOT a fan of their pizza!
  3. After reconciling 6 months of bank statements, I wanted a glass of wine – I had 2!

So am I upset that I “fell off the wagon”? A little. Am I going to beat myself up over it? Not a chance! The way I see it, even with my slip-ups, I STILL got more fruits & veggies in my body than I did the same day last week.  I’m back on track this morning and that is the important thing! And besides – I got on the scale this morning and I am down 7 pounds!

So here is what I drank on Day 5:

Breakfast:

carrot-juice

7 carrots, small piece of ginger

Lunch:

bolthouse-farms-green-goodness-juice

Bolthouse Green Goodness (store-bought)

Dinner:

Mean Green

I went with a classic – the Mean Green!  6 kale leaves, 4 stalks of celery, 2 Granny Smith apples, 1 cucumber, 1/2 lemon, piece of ginger.

My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 4 Update (Cherries From Heaven)

juice-fast

Well, I got through Day 4 of my 10 Day Juice Fast and I have to say….Day 4 was the easiest day yet! I did “cheat” and have 1 Hershey kiss, but after all the juices made from fruits and vegetables (especially spinach & kale), the chocolate was so sweet to me that I actually spit it out. I hope this means that my goal of “resetting my tastebuds” is actually happening!

Hennyway – here is what I drank on Day 4:

Breakfast: this was the first time I had juiced strawberries and the flavor is so strong, I am convinced that I could have added another handful of spinach and 2 more kale leaves and not have noticed a difference in taste!
strawberry-orange-spinach
1/2 lb strawberries, 2 Gala apples, 2 oranges, 3 large handfuls of spinach, 3 kale leaves

Lunch: I’m calling this one “Cherries From Heaven” The cherries gave this juice an amazing creaminess and it was just heavenly! I will forever be grateful to The Thrify Mama for this recipe!

Cherries From Heaven

Oh – this is just Heaven In A Glass!

2 cups chunked pumpkin (I used Butternut Squash because I can’t find pumpkin right now), 3 carrots, 1 handful spinach, 2 cups dark sweet cherries, 1 peeled orange

Dinner: I was a little apprehensive about juicing lettuce, but adding the pineapple and apple (as well as the pumpkin pie spice) made this one a very pleasant surprise!

pineapple-squash-pumpkin-pie-spice-lettuce

1/2 pineapple, 2 cups cubed butternut squash, 1 Fuji apple, 1 leaf of kale, 1 romaine lettuce heart (I buy them in the bags of 3 and just stuck 1 of them in the juicer), 1/2 TBS pumpkin pie spice

Day 4 thoughts:

I was shocked at how much I DIDN’T want “regular food” yesterday. Juicing is starting to feel normal to me, and something that I know that I will continue to do (at least for 1 meal at day) after my 10 day juice fast is complete. Getting enough fruits and vegetables in to my diet has always been an issue for me and I love that I am getting all these nutrients in to my body!

Oh – and I was asleep by 10:30pm last night…WINNING!

My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 3 Update (I Love the Mean Green!)

juice-fast

If you remember, I started a 10 Day Juice Fast for a variety of reasons this past Friday.  Sunday was Day 3 and I woke up at 6:00am with no alarm clock.  While I had given up coffee for this juice fast, I was really craving a cup.  It wasn’t that I needed the caffeine, but I just really missed my morning “routine”.  I admit that I cheated a bit…1 cup of coffee with just a little milk (but NO sweetener – as you remember, I am trying to “reset” my tastebuds to not like artificial sweeteners and sugars).  Here is what I drank on Day 3:

Breakfast

I enjoyed this so much yesterday, I had to make it again today!

I enjoyed this so much yesterday, I had to make it again today!

6 carrots, 2 gala apples, 2 handfuls spinach

Lunch
kale-cantaloupe-apple-celery-orange

4 kale leaves, handful of spinach, 1/2 cantaloupe, 2 apples, 1 celery stalk, 1 orange (peeled before juicing)

Dinner

This is basically The Mean Green with some cantaloupe and squash added to it!

This is basically The Mean Green with some cantaloupe and squash added to it!

6 kale leaves, 4 stalks of celery, 2 granny smith apples, 1 cucumber, 1/2 cantaloupe, handful of butternut squash, 1/2 lemon, Piece of ginger - this made a LOT of juice, but the squash and cantaloupe weren’t going to last more than another day, so I threw them in as well. The results were yummy! (and I had the rest of the juice for a late-night snack)

Day 3 thoughts:

Typically, Day 3 is supposed to be the “hardest day” of any juice fast (because that is the point at which you start to REALLY detox), but I didn’t have any problems with light-headedness or headaches. This may be because I “cheated” and had a cup of coffee in the morning, or it could be because I had a salad last night (it wasn’t all veggies, there was some cheese on it and I did have a tiny bit of dressing). Best of all – I was again in bed and asleep by 11:00pm!

As far as how my juice fast is helping my weight loss efforts? It’s a little complicated, because I neglected to check the calendar before I started my juice fast (ladies – you know what I mean ;-) ).  While my weight has only gone down about 2 lbs, I am far less bloated than I would normally be at this time of the month and my jeans are looser on me than before I started this!

I will be sharing with you my thoughts and what I drank during my my 10 Day Juice Fast and I hope that you find this info helpful!

My 10 Day Juice Fast | Day 1 and 2 Update!

juice-fast

If you remember, I started a 10 Day Juice Fast for a variety of reasons this past Friday…and I have to say: I feel great! As I mentioned, I have been having a problem with insomnia for more than a year (I usually can’t get to bed until at least 2:00am) and my diet has left much to be desired.

After 2 days, I am happy to report that I have been sleeping better (likely because I also gave up all other beverages except water…and yes – that means NO COFFEE!), I have had more energy and I have already lost a few pounds. I have also learned the following:

  • I like juicing
  • Beets are evil things sent straight from the bowels of the earth
  • Giving up coffee was harder than giving up chewing
  • Next time I do a juice fast, make sure I stay close to home on Day 2 (more on that later)

So what did I drink?

Day 1 – Breakfast
carrot-juice
6 carrots, pinch of fresh ginger

Day 1 – Lunch

Phil Staples Mean Green

Phil Staples Mean Green

6 kale leaves, 4 stalks of celery, 2 Granny Smith apples, 1 cucumber, 1/2 lemon, piece of ginger. (note: that is the “official recipe for the Phil Staples mean Green from the “Fat Sick & Nearly Dead” movie, but I found it too lemony for my taste. I ended up adding an additional Granny Smith apple and 2 large handfuls of baby spinach and it was PERFECT)

Dinner – Day 1
I made the beet juice recipe from the The Thrifty Mama and just about gagged (I can’t stand beets). It didn’t hang around long enough for me to take a picture. But I still needed to drink something, and so I made this and it was HEAVEN:
orange_apple_squash
2 gala apples, 2 oranges, 2 generous handfuls cubed butternut squash

More about Day 1 of my 10 Day Juice Fast:  I was tired…really tired.  I have a feeling that this was more about the fact that it was the first day in more than 2 years that I hadn’t had at least 2 cups of coffee. I ended up needing a nap at about 3:00pm (thank goodness Brad was home) and was in bed by 11:30pm.

Day 2

I woke up with no problems at 5:00am Saturday morning.  While 5.5 hours of sleep may not sound like much, it was more than I had had in a LONG time.  I hopped out of bed and in to the shower and ready to take on the day!

Breakfast – Day 2

carrots-apples-spinach

6 carrots, 2 gala apples, 2 handfuls spinach, 1 handful cubed butternut squash – this was absolutely delicious!

Lunch – Day 2

Phil Staples Mean Green again (see recipe above). I loved this so much, I wanted it again for lunch!

Dinner – Day 2

here was my first stumbling block – Brad called on the way home from work and he really wanted to go out to eat. When I reminded him that I was doing my juice fast, he was so apologetic (for forgetting) that I felt bad and said that we should go. We ended up at Applebee’s (after 2 other places had at least an hour wait), where I got a house salad, let Brad pick off my croutons (which he always does anyway) and just a smidge of dressing.  Then I came home and drank the rest of my Mean Green that I had made for lunch (I made a double batch). Hey – it’s my first fast – I’m not perfect!

More thoughts on Day 2: I had heard about the “side effects” of a juice fast, but for some reason, assumed that they would start on Day 1. it turns out, they didn’t start until Day 2, and just as I was getting ready to take my son to his basketball game. I spent much of the day shuttling kids to games and bowling parties, always making sure that I was never far from a bathroom (I know – TMI – but if you are considering a juice fast, this is info you NEED!). Additionally, I was in bed again by 11:30pm, which is a major coup for me!

Have You Ever Done a Juice Fast?

juice-fast

Like many of you, one of my New Years Resolutions was to lose weight and get healthier I am currently 55 lbs overweight, have been struggling with insomnia for almost a year and spend much of the day feeling tired and unproductive.

About 2 years ago, I started hearing about the benefits of juicing.  My sister, who has also struggled with her weight, lost more then 40 pounds by replacing 1 or 2 meals a day with freshly juiced fruits and vegetables (in addition to adding in an exercise routine).  I decided to give it a try!  Unfortunately, the juicer that I bought was not a good one and wasted much produce to yield little juice and I quickly lost interest.

About 3 months ago, I came across the movie Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead (watch it for free on Netflix).  It is the story of a man who committed to a 60 Day Juice Fast, drinking nothing but freshly juice fruits and vegetables.  Not only did he lose weight, but he had more energy and was able to re-set his taste buds so that he no longer craved many of the foods that are so yummy, but wreak havoc on our bodies.

Fast forward to about a month ago, and I noticed that my friend Crystal from The Thrifty Mama was starting a 10-Day Juice Fast.  Crystal is one of my “Best Blogging Friends” and someone that I trust when it comes to issues about food and healthy living (although she is not a doctor and is not giving medical advice).  I read with interest each day as she wrote about her juice fast, the recipes that she shared and how she felt each day.

When her juice fast was over, she announced that she would be doing another one beginning January 11, 2013 and invited us to join along with her…and I am taking her up on it! After much research, I bought a Breville Juice Fountain Multi-Speed 900-Watt Juicer and am ready to go!

What do I hope to accomplish from this juice fast?

  • Detox my body
  • Kickstart my weight loss efforts
  • Reset my tastebuds
  • Just see if I can do it!

For my juice fast, I am adhering to the following guidelines:

  1. Replace all meals with fresh juice.  Drink juice in between meals as needed to stave off hunger. (Recipes are being provided to me by The Thrifty Mama, although I may tweak some of them…espcially anything involving beets – ICK!)
  2. Keep fruits to a minimum and concentrate on juicing with leafy greens and orange vegetables (kale, carrots, squash, etc).  Fruits can be used for sweetness or a treat.
  3. Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day.
  4. To maximize the detox effects, stick to the Dirty Dozen, Clean Fifteen produce guidelines.

I started this morning on my juice fast and will be sharing with you my thoughts as I go along. If you are interested in joining the juice fast there is still time to get in on the fun both the The Thrifty Mama as well as the Juicing For Health With The Thrifty Mama Facebook page!

Have you ever done a juice fast? Would you do one? Why or Why not?

Kicked Up Kale Chips

Kale chips are my new obsession.  I am looking for new ways to get more leafy greens in my diet.  The problem is, aside from spinach and typical “salad greens” (romaine, spring mix, etc)…I am not really crazy about most leafy greens.

About a month ago, I was at my mother’s house and she had a big storage bags full of homemade kale chips and I just fell in love! My mother had made them with just olive oil and sea salt and they were delicious, but I was looking for something with a bit more flavor.  I made these the other day and this is my new favorite snack!  I actually used an entire bunch of kale, thinking I would have plenty left over for a snack the next day…but ended up eating the entire batch in 1 day!

Best of all – it couldn’t be simpler to make!

Kicked Up Kale Chips

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: PT10-13M

Total Time: PT15-18M

Yield: 4 servings

Kicked Up Kale Chips

Ingredients

  • 1 small bunch of kale
  • 1 tsp organic olive oil (or non-organic)
  • Emeril's Essence (or make your own - see below)
  • salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper
  2. Wash the kale and pat dry. You might want to let it sit out for 15 minutes to let more water evaporate. Remove the stems from the kale and throw the stems away.
  3. Rip the kale in to larger pieces than you would normally eat (it will shrink in the oven) and place in a large bowl
  4. Toss the olive oil with the kale and spread the kale in a single layer on to the baking sheet. Alternatively, you can spread the kale on the baking sheet and give it a few sprays with olive oil (I use my Misto). Toss the kale a bit and give it a few more sprays.
  5. Sprinkle the kale with salt and Emeril's Essence. Don't overdo it!
  6. Bake the kale for about 10 minutes until the kale is crispy and slightly darker. If some of the smaller pieces are done, remove them and let the remaining cook a few more minutes.
  7. Enjoy!

55 From Fit: The Journey to Lose 50 Pounds

So I have a confession to make:

I am fat!

I have struggled with my weight my entire adult life. After Thomas was born 10 years ago, I went on Weight Watchers, followed the plan and was 1.5 lbs from my goal weight when I got pregnant with Jonathan (yes – I cried….SO close).

Since Jonathan was born, I made half-hearted attempts to lose the weight, but still remained about 30 lbs overweight. Then this past summer hit and between the death of my brother-in-law, the kids constantly fighting and the growing demands of this website, I started “stress-eating” and didn’t stop, gaining 25 lbs since June.

Last week I rejoined Weight Watchers and found that I am 55 pounds from my goal weight.  While I won’t say that the numbers on the scale shocked me, it was a very humbling moment.  I was forced to take responsibility for my actions and take steps to correct them.

You may be thinking “why wouldn’t she wait until after the holidays to do that?”.  The answer to that is simple:  I was tired of making excuses as to why I would “start back soon”.  I may not have lost any weight the first week, but because I was now back “On Program”, I made it through 2 very “pound packing” meals without gaining. I consider that a success!

In an effort to hold myself accountable, I am starting “55 From Fit Friday” and I hope you will join me.  Let’s talk about our challenges, struggles AND our successes!

Is weight loss one of your goals in 2012?  How are you planning on making that happen?
