Netflix: Free 1 Month Trial (Or, in which, the Cherry family leaps in to the year 2009!)

Right now you can get a FREE one-month trial of Netflix!

(begin completely unsolicited review of the Netflix streaming package)

For years, it seemed like we were the only family who didn’t have Netflix. I would hear from “real-life” friends and family about their Netflix “queue” and I was convinced that we were the only ones without Netflix, but I didn’t really care. We had a great DirectTV account with HBO. I was in Heaven.

About 4 days ago, Brad asked me what I thought about getting Netflix because he heard that there was a free one-month trial. I basically said “Sure – whatever…as long as it doesn’t cost us anything”. And even if we messed up on canceling before the free month was up? It would only be an additional $8 for the 2nd month.

Well – within 4 days, I am ADDICTED to Netflix and the “streaming account”. With the touch of a button, I can watch the “campiest of movies from the 80s” as well as fairly recent movies. Last night we watched “Murder By Death” (an early 80s Neil Simon movie) and tonight we watched “The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons”. The kids love it for the plethora of movies, cartoons, series that are aimed at their age-group, etc.

I gotta tell you, now that we have Netflix, we will be canceling our HBO subscription as soon as the Big Love series finale airs (sorry – I AM seeing that series through to the finale….LOVE IT), and Brad and I are already talking about reducing our Direct TV package to a lower level. Now that we have Netflix, we don’t need all the bells & whistles of our current satellite package!

Although I should be honest – we got the $10/month package that gives us 1 DVD rental at a time in addition to the unlimited “streaming account”

Netflix: Mindi Loves It!

Hershey: More Than Just a Chocolate Bar and a Kiss!

Last week, I had the unique opportunity to be invited to Hershey for 2 days for a “cookie swap”.  There will be more on the Cookie Swap tomorrow (along with a giveaway), but I have to get this post up now…because what I learned in my time at Hershey has honestly changed my life.

Hershey – you think it’s a just a chocolate bar and some kisses..right?  Yeah – you are wrong!  Hershey is help.  Hershey is hope.  Hershey is saving children!

Let me ‘splain…no there is too much….let me sum up (snaps if you know the quote!).

When Milton Hershey was alive, he couldn’t have children with his beloved wife, so they decided to start a school for orphans to give them a chance at life.  More than 100 years later, the Milton Hershey School helps at-risk children and change lives for the better!

(yeah Min – that’s the PR pitch…why are you writing about this?)

As part of my Hershey trip, we got to have a Cookie Swap with children from the Milton Hershey School.  I have heard of the school before but never had the full details.  Then I spent some time with the children of the Milton Hershey School. The children I met, talked to and cuddled with?

One was at the school because their grandmother could no longer look after them after their father was incarcerated for killing their mother

Three boys were the children of a mom who legally immigrated here from one of the “Diamond slavery countries” and told her children that if they screwed this chance up, they would have to return to Africa and see what REAL suffering was.

Ethan (the boy that I became most attached to, because everything about him reminded me of Jonathan), told me that he heard his sister was trying to get in to the school and he hoped she did because he hadn’t seen her for 2 years and he really missed her.

Yeah – I only cried a little! (where “a little” = heading to the bathroom for a tissue every 15 minutes)

The Milton Hershey School is awesomeness.  They provide free tuition, food, clothing, medical and dental and housing to at-risk children.  AND, if a child graduates from the MHS with at least a 2.5 GPA, you know what they get?  A $80K scholarship to college!  What they are doing for children is nothing short of a miracle.

Best of all?  Nothing in this post can be construed as a fundraiser for the Milton Hershey School.  You could be a gadzillionaire and offer to donate $10 million to the Milton Hershey School and they would have to turn your donation away.  The way the Trust was set up, the ONLY way to support the school is through purchasing Hershey products.

The strangest thing?

We were talking to the PR guy for the MHS and he was talking about going on “recruitment drives”.  The first thing in my head?  “What do you mean, you have to have recruitment drives?  With what you are doing for in-need children, you should have a waiting list!!!!” Well, it turns out, not enough people know about the incredible opportunity that is the Milton Hershey School. You can learn more about it here.

Ethan will stay in my mind forever….

…….and he is the reason that I will stick to Hershey products from now on!

Full Disclosure:  Hershey paid for my trip to Hershey and never requested that I write a single post.  In addition, my numbers may be a little off.  I posted that you get a $80K scholarship for a 2.5 GPA, but it may have been a $88K for a 2.0 GPA.  I’m tired and too lazy to look up if my stats are NOT as good as I reported….get over it! Hershey is the most awesome company that I have ever worked with and I can’t wait to work with them again! (Ahem – no offense to the other PR companies that I have worked with…but you CAN take a lesson from Hershey!  Get an Ethan of your own and you will inspire the same loyalty in me!)

FootzyRolls: 50% Off Today Only!

Oh – I LOVE this sale!

Today only, you can score any shoe in the FootzyRoll Everyday Collection for only $12.99.

Shipping for 1-2 pairs should run you about $6.50.

So what are FootzyRolls?  They are roll-up shoes that you can fit in most purses and are sturdy enough to withstand walking around the city streets.

I’ve mentioned many times before my love of high heels.  At 5’2″, I need to wear heels just to reach the snack cabinet in our kitchen!  I wear heels about 75% of the time, so naturally, when I went to BlogHer a few weeks ago, I didn’t see any reason why I wouldn’t be able to run around New York City in 2″-3″ heels for 4 days without ever really sitting down.

Wrong-O!  By Friday night, my feet were KILLING me.  I had attended the Getting Gorgeous event earlier that day and Liz Lange (of Shopafrolic and the Liz Lange Maternity fame) gave me a pair of FootzyRolls to try.  I pulled them out and my feet immediately screamed “Thank You!”.

Don’t live in the city?  They have plenty of pairs that can look dressy enough for dancing.  I can’t even count how many weddings and events that I have been to where I had to stop dancing because my feet were killing me.  Having a pair of these would have been a HUGE plus!

Note:  I received a pair of these for free about 3 weeks ago and NOBODY requested that I write about them or mention them on my site.  However, when I saw that Living Rich With Coupons found this sale, I figured I would share the sale info with you, as well as my personal experiences. If you wear heels, these are a “must-have”!

Mindi Loves It: Tide Swash Smooth It Out

So one of the things I have been determined to do is insert more of “me” in to this site.  Writing about deals can get very boring and there are products that I use that may not be on sale, but that I couldn’t live without.  I thought I would start of series on these items.

Anyway – so I thought I would kick this off with a product that I discovered while I was at BlogHer:  Tide Swash Smooth It Out.

What is Tide Tide Swash Smooth It Out?  Simply put, it is a spray wrinkle releaser that actually WORKS.

Tide Swash Smooth It Out was included in one of the swag bags at the Getting Gorgeous event Friday morning and by Friday night, I had reason to put it to good use.

You see, anyone who knows me knows that I wear mostly black.  Well, I had made a big deal to my bloggy friends that I had bought a pink dress to wear to BlogHer.  But then I got halfway to BlogHer and realized that I left that pink dress hanging on the closet door.  Therefore, I did what any reasonable person would do.  I called Brad and insisted he overnight it to the hotel.  After much coaxing, he agreed…and overnighted it in a flat-rate box roughly the size of my laptop.

When I pulled the dress out of the box, I almost wanted to cry.  While I CAN iron, I do NOT iron.  Then I remembered the demo of the Tide Swash Smooth It Out that I saw at the Getting Gorgeous event and checked my swag bag and there was a bottle in there.  I decided to give it a try!  Within 5 minutes of spraying it, there wasn’t a wrinkle on my dress! (of course, the fact that once I put it on and took a picture next to this skinny chick, I exclaimed “I LOOK LIKE A PINK WATER BUFFALO!” and ran in to change doesn’t matter.  I didn’t wear it, but it WAS unwrinkled)

So far, I have only tried it on a t-shirt material dress (4 of them) and a linen blouse….but it is one of my new favorite products!  The best part is that you can throw it in your purse and give yourself a spritz after a long car trip.

Tide Swash Smooth It Out is not available in stores right now, but it is available on the Proctor & Gamble site…and you can get a 2-pack cheaper on Amazon.com for $11.99 (and it qualifies for FREE Super Saver Shipping).  Better yet, choose the Subscribe & Save option and pay only $10.19 for a 2-pack.

Tide Swash Smooth It Out:  Mindi Loves It!

P.S.:  for those that know my husband, please don’t tell him that I never wore the dress that night…he thinks I forgot my camera and my cell phone battery died, so I couldn’t take any pictures of me in the dress

(Full disclosure:  as a blogger, I get many things for free and when I receive something for free, it is usually in conjunction with a giveaway.  The items in my “Mindi Loves It” posts will NOT include this items.  They will be items that I use that I would buy even if I couldn’t find a good deal or a coupon.  They may include items which I previously received for free, but continue to buy/use.  Of course, I do love Coach bags and if the people at Coach want to send me a few……)
