Winter (and cold and flu season) is upon us and staying healthy is on everybody’s mind. Here are some tips to get you through the season!
Every year it is the same thing. The news tells us how this year is going to be the worst year for the flu and that we should all run out and get a flu shot immediately. Now – I am not criticizing anyone who chooses to get the vaccine, but I have never had one and there are other way to make it through the season.
Get Plenty of Sleep – your body repairs itself while you sleep and getting enough sleep is crucial to your health. I admit that I often struggle with this myself (there just never seem to be enough hours in the day), but it is important.
Wash Your Hands Often – effective handwashing can help stop the spread of germs in their tracks. Be sure to wash your hands after blowing your nose, covering a cough and, of course, using the bathroom (I shouldn’t even have to say that last part, but there are still people who refuse to wash their hands)
Eat Healthy – make sure that you are stocked up on plenty of fruits and veggies and then actually EAT them. Make some good old-fashioned chicken noodle soup and skip the junk food. Fueling your body with healthy foods will help it resist sickness.
Know Where The Flu Is Worst – the flu is everywhere, but sites like the Cold And Flu Finder can tell you if the flue is prevalent in your area, or if it hasn’t yet struck. That can help you make decisions and minimize your risk of getting sick. If, for instance, the flu is widespread in your area. you might want to forgo that trip to the mall or the movies.
Stay Hydrated – I always have a harder time staying hydrated in the winter (it is so much easier in the summer when it is hot and you are drinking water like crazy), but it is important to your health. If the thought of drinking 8 glasses of water is daunting, don’t forget that (caffeine-free) herbal tea and even clear soups can go a long way towards staying healthy!
Prevent, But Be Prepared – Take advantage of sales and coupons (like this coupon for Scotties tissues. If you have children, make grab this coupon for Triaminic or any of the ones below) to stock up on the items that will get help you heal if you DO get sick.
Staying healthy during cold and flu season can be a challenge, but it can be done.
