Don’t Let an Empty Shelf Bother You!

empty grocery shelves

One of the biggest frustrations we couponers have is getting to the store, coupons in hand and excited to get some great deals…only to find an empty shelf where the items you want should be!

But no worries!  In many cases, you an avoid frustration with just a few simple steps.

Step 1:  Be on good terms with the cashiers and managers of your store

I know that this is easier said than done, especially for those of you who live in a 1-store town and the employees of that store are blaming you and your free box of Cocoa Puffs for being the reason the economy is in the tank.  But for those of you who don’t have to deal with unreasonable store employees, this is the best thing you an ever do!  I’ve said many times that I don’t believe in “flying under the radar” and “killing them with kindness” when it comes to doing deals.  There are many reasons for this.

1.  You are seen as an honest couponer (assuming you are, of course)

2.  The staff starts to understand your buying habits (and this is important for Step 2)

3.  By not being seen as “sneaky” or…ahem…”female-dog-y”, you will find that the staff is more willing to help you (important for Step 2 & 3)

4.  Life is too short to be disagreeable.

Step 2:  Ask for rainchecks

Rainchecks are your friend.  Rainchecks are good.  Rainchecks can help to make a deal even sweeter.  I have had many times when I have asked for a raincheck on a wonderful deal for which I had no coupons..and then 2 weeks later some coupons were in the Sunday paper.  SCORE!

So why did I say in Step 1 that it helps if the staff knows your buying habits?  In many cases, stores (or employees) will limit the quantities on rainchecks…even if there was no limit on the number that you could have purchased if they had the items in stock.  I have asked for rainchecks and when they asked me how many I wanted a raincheck for, I said something like “well – I would have bought 15 of them”.  Each time they have looked at me with a smile and said “Yeah – you probably would have, wouldn’t you?”.  The employees at my local stores know that I am only asking for a raincheck if it is a can’t-miss deal, and will help me out with getting the quantities that I want/need.

Of course, getting rainchecks isn’t always a bed of roses…in many cases waiting for them to get the items back in stock could mean that coupons expire or Catalina deals end.

Which brings me to……

Step 3:  Place an order for those deals that you can’t miss!

Most store managers (not leads…you want guys in ties, women in “regular” clothes) love coupons and understand that they don’t lose money off of them.  They also love moving product through their stores!  It makes their numbers look good and makes the guys wearing more expensive ties (their bosses) happy with them as store managers.

I got the idea to do this deal to get the water for Bingo Night on Monday.  I knew that there was little chance that there was a single Deer Park 6-pack left in the store (it’s a “double dip Catalina deal”)I simply went in to the store on Monday and asked if I could order 6 cases of the 6-packs of water in their next delivery, as well as have them set aside 9 24-packs of soda.  They were more than happy to do it for me!  (and once I told them that the water was for a school event, they were even happier)

No stress.  No fuss….I simply walked in to the store on Wednesday morning (when they told me it would be in) and 5 minutes later I had an employee pulling a pallet full of water & soda with my name on it through the store!

Now – items like water and soda often have more frequent deliveries, but grocery stores get deliveries every day.  By being on good terms with the employees at your store, they will be more willing to help you out with situations like this (and place that order…just try to get in to the store on the first day or two of the sale to make sure your order comes in before the sale ends!)

So don’t be upset by an empty shelf…with a little planning you can turn it in to a positive!

Best Deal of The Week

Add another case of water and 7 24-packs of soda to this picture!

Add another case of water and 7 24-packs of soda to this picture!

You asked for it – you got it!  Welcome to the very first Best Deal of The Week!

Best Deal of the Week will be posted every Wednesday (and usually at 7:00am.  You’ll understand why this is late in a minute).  There will be a Mr. Linky for you to post  your best shopping trip in the past 7 days, or if you know of great deals at ANY grocery store, feel free to link to it!  We have people here from all over the country, so you can post deals from your stores from Maine to Florida to Hawaii to Alaska!  If your post isn’t ready by Wednesday, or you have multiple deals, feel free to leave links all week until the next Deal of The Week post!

I’m not shopping this week and I’m not cooking.  We are living on leftovers and clearing out the fridge!  Why?  Because I am having a party for 70-80 people at my house on Saturday and need every inch of fridge and freezer space!  If that means that Saturday morning breakfast is eggs and marashino cherries…so be it!

In addition, I am coordinating Bingo Night at school for about 300 people on Friday Night (yeah – I overextended myself just a titch).  One thing that we do is sell water for $1/bottle and we usually sell about 100 bottles.

Therefore, I needed soda for the party and water for Bingo Night!  Off to Genuardi’s to take advantage of the Living Well Catalina deals!

So here’s my deal of the week:

I ended up getting 24 6-packs of Deer Park Water and 9 24-packs of Pepsi products for a net cost of $12.25!  Note:  I did have a $15 gift card from Genuardi’s

Transaction #1:  3 24 packs of Pepsi at $4.99; 8 6 packs of water at $1.99

used $1/2 Deer Park, a $10 Living Well Catalina (from doing previous deals), <strong>$15 Gift card and $5.49 cash

Received:  $10 Living Well Catalina and 4 $2 Catalinas from Deer Park and a $1/2 Deer Park Coupon

Transaction #2:  3 24 packs of Pepsi at $4.99; 8 6 packs of water at $1.99

used $1/2 Deer Park, $10 Living Well Catalina 4 $2 Catalinas from transaction #1 and $12.38 cash

Received:  $10 Living Well Catalina and 4 $2 Catalinas from Deer Park and a $1/2 Deer Park coupon

Transaction #3:   3 24 packs of Pepsi at $4.99; 8 6 packs of water at $1.99

used $1/2 Deer Park, $10 Living Well Catalina 4 $2 Catalinas from transaction #2 and $12.38 cash

Received:  $10 Living Well Catalina and 4 $2 Catalinas from Deer Park and a $1/2 Deer Park coupon

Total OOP: $30.25
Catalinas left:  $18
Net Cost:  $12.25

Total savings (according to Genuardi’s):  73%

(although in fairness, most people won’t have the $15 gift card that I had…so adjust the totals accordingly!)

The soda will be used for our party on Saturday and all the water should be used for Bingo Night…It’s like I got the water free!

Links must be directly to your post (not just your site) and should include a linkback to this post (something like “to see more great deals, check out Moms Need to Know”…or however you want to word it!)

When leaving a link in Mr Linky, please leave your name (or site name) and a description of your deal (Free soup at Kroger, $3,000 for $.02, etc)

Can’t wait to see your deals!

Coupons.com: Get these before they are gone!

Coupons.com typically changes their coupons on the 1st of each month and, while I can’t guarantee it, there is a good chance that some of these coupons will be replaced by others on Friday!

California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizza:  $2/1 (I only ever get $1/2 in the Sunday inserts)

DiGiorno Pizza:  $1.25/1 (same thing  – I only ever get the $1/2 coupons!)

V-8 or V-8 Splash:  $1 (they seem to be really pushing this lately which means good sales!)

Kashi Coupons:  1 of them has already hit the print limit, but there are still $1/2 coupons for cereals and bars

Dry Idea:  $2 (most Targets have this for $2 right now which means you get it free!)

Pedigree DentaStix:  $2.50 (I don’t know how much these cost, but this is higher-value than you usually see!)

Hasbro:  several $5 coupons for games

Claritin coupons:  a $4 & a $3 coupon

and many more!

Click here or on the Coupon printer in this post to get them!

(don’t forget that you are allowed 2 prints of each coupon!)

And make sure to check back on Friday because all of the new coupons will be up.  As they typically give you 30 days to use them, I always suggest printing off any that you think that you might need.  If you wait for a sale, they may have reached their print limit and be gone (grrrr…Perdue Short Cuts) !

Free Yard and Garden Maintenance Class at Home Depot

Home Depot Do It Herself Workshop

Home Depot has a new Do-it-Herself workshop coming up on May 14th and this is one that I really think I like!  I also like the coupons that they give out to attendees!

From the website:

This month our FREE Do-It-Herself workshop focuses on your outdoor space.  Join women in your community as you learn all the skills you need to unlock your creativity while you grow and maintain a yard that reflects your style.

Workshop Highlights:

Effective watering and fertilizing techniques

Creating colorful accents with containers and baskets

Go organic and grow your own vegetables

One thing I like about this is that, at least in part focusing on growing your own veggies.  I can’t tell you how much I love being able to walk out my back door and grab fresh tomatoes, peppers and herbs from my yard!

Registration is required and as in the past, those who attend the clinic/workshop will get “special savings” (usually a $10 coupon)
