2010: The Year That Was…..

As the final hours of 2010 draw to a close, I am sitting down for the first time and really thinking about the year that was 2010.

I kicked off the year by heading to New York City with some local blogging friends to attend the Martha Stewart show about blogging.  We spent a fun night partying in NYC before getting up at the crack of “Oh My God It’s Early!” to shiver outside.  Watching Martha in action was so much fun (and we especially had fun with the producer/stage manager who didn’t seem to know the difference between a blog and a Tweet)

Just a few weeks later, I was off to Nashville to attend the Blissdom conference. That conference changed my entire outlook on this site and helped me refocus on what I wanted to do here.  It was also at this time that I really got to know some of my favorite Frugal bloggers.  We had so much fun running around and learning from each other.  As an added bonus, we got to head to Dave Ramsey’s headquarters, get a personal tour of the building and MEET DAVE!  That trip ended up being an extra day…if you remember, that was the same weekend that the entire East Coast got hit with a blizzard and the airports all shut down!

In March, I learned what I was REALLY made of…and that is steel.  I came under attack by one of the most vicious groups on The Internets (these are the same people who have hacked government websites, Sara Palins site and many many more).  The Frugal Blogging community rallied around me and saved my behind.  I have to tell you, it gave me great joy to know that, in the end, I won!

In April, I was asked to speak on a panel for a Philadelphia-area bloggers event. We had a great morning mingling and talking about how to take your blog to “the next level”.  I am still in shock that so many people seem to look to me for advice!

That same month, we had The Great Hamster Escape of 2010. I thought that sucker was gone for good, until 3 days later when I was sitting on my sofa and looked up and saw him looking at me! (FYI – he has since gone to the Great Habitrail In The Sky!)

April 16, 2010: my favorite date of the year….that is the day that Elizabeth said to herself “I think I will try to use the bathroom”.  About 10 days and only a few “accidents” later, my days of buying diapers were over.  I had been buying them every.single.week since May of 2001.  I was MORE than ready to be done!

The Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, I woke up literally unable to move.  Three hours later, I was in the hospital crying in pain.  It took an unGodly amount of drugs to manage the pain as well as correct the problem (and I still have no idea what caused it) and I pretty much ignored this site for 3 days…and you guys didn’t leave me.  Thanks for that!

The summer went as normal…until I received an email from the people at Subway inviting me AND my boys to Los Angeles.  The entire event was centered around Subway and their support for Little League.  My boys got their first airplane ride and their first chance to see the Pacific Ocean.  To this day, they describe it as their favorite vacation!

Then we got Coupon…my beloved dog and the official Moms Need To Know mascot!

Oh – and who can forget BlogHer and me running around New York City with some of your favorite Frugal Bloggers?

And then there was Chicago.  I was once again invited to be a Savings.com DealPro.  I have been a huge fan of Savings.com and this trip brought out the ultimate geek in me!  I learned so much about the “geek side” of blogging (I am a PROUD geek) and I got to spend time with some of my favorite other bloggers…AND I got to get felt up by Robert Knepper!

And then there was the Cookie Swap That Changed My Life.  I still get misty thinking about the children of the Milton Hershey School.  I have been on many Brand/Blogger Trips, but none of them have affected me as much as this one did.

And here we are….New Years Eve.

As I reflect on the events that changed me this year, no list would be complete without YOU.  That you continue to visit this site each day both amazes and humbles me. Who am I?  Just Mindi Brown who married a great guy and became Mindi Cherry and because I had 3 kids, I needed to save money.  In my wildest dreams, I never thought that my needing to save money could affect so many people.

And your comments and emails inspire me every day.

So thank you…and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Giveaway: Seventh Generation Laundry Prize Pack

UPDATE:  Congrats to winner Jennifer R (j1man1r66@xx.xx)

Did you know that the laundry detergent you may be using could contain little-known chemicals called optical brighteners?  According to scientific research, these can cause allergic reactions, are toxic to small fish and other aquatic life, and can pollute your waterways.

When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is.

So how can you avoid these optical brighteners? Seventh Generation makes it easy because their laundry detergents are not only free of optical brighteners, but they’re also non-toxic . In addition, because Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable, you can rest easy knowing you made a considerate choice for your family and the environment.

When washed in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners, clothes appear to glow under a black light. When you use Seventh Generation liquid laundry products, you won’t see the same glow on your clothing. Take a look at the experiment in the photo below. Seventh Generation took two identical organic cotton shirts and washed one in a conventional laundry detergent that contains optical brighteners and the other in Seventh Generation laundry detergent which does not use optical brighteners.

The people at Seventh Generation also sent me their laundry products as well as organic cotton shirts and a black light so that I could conduct the same experiment myself…and I saw the exact same results (although I couldn’t get a good picture). It’s nice to see yet ANOTHER chemical not being included in my laundry detergent!

For more information about Seventh Generation laundry products, please visit www.seventhgeneration.com/no-glow, or sign up for their newsletter at http://www.seventhgeneration.com/community. Be sure to visit Seventh Generation on Facebook and on Twitter to “Like” and “Follow”, so that you can keep up with the latest news from Seventh Generation.

Giveaway: Fiber One Products + $25 Genuardi’s/Safeway Gift Card

While I am trying to eat fewer processed foods, there are times when I just don’t feel like making homemade granola bars or my sweet tooth is yelling at me or I just want to grab something and throw it in my purse and run out the door. Fiber One Granola bars are always in my pantry and continue to be one of my favorite quick snacks.

As for Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters? That has been my absolute favorite cereal for some time and it continues to be….to the point that I don’t like any other raisin bran cereals!

The people at Fiber One and MyBlogSpark asked me to try the 3 revamped flavors and I have to say, they were pretty good!  I didn’t think it was possible to improve the Raisin Bran Clusters, but they did!

  • Fiber One Honey Clusters have a brand new flake! Every one-cup serving is full of tasty honey clusters, antioxidant vitamins A and E, and 13 grams of fiber.
  • Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters now contain crispier, lightly sweetened whole grain flakes. With plump, juicy raisins and crunchy clusters it packs 11 grams of fiber and antioxidant vitamins A and E into every serving.
  • With rich chocolate chips and a new and improved taste, Fiber One Oats & Chocolate chewy bars are a good source of calcium and contain 9 grams of fiber in each bar.

Would you like to try the new Fiber One products? One winner will receive: coupons good for one free box of Fiber One cereal and one free box of Fiber One bars, in addition to a $25 Safeway gift card (also valid at Dominick’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Vons, and Genuardi’s)

To enter to win (each counts as a separate entry, so leave a separate comment!)

1. Leave a comment letting me know your favorite Fiber One Product.

New to using coupons or don’t understand the lingo? Get all the information you need to rock the deals on my New?  Start Here! page.

Acme doubles all coupons up to $.99, with no limit on the number of coupons that they will double.

It’s another slow week at Acme, but as I have been saying since Thanksgiving, the Holiday season if the one time of year that stores don’t need to have massive sales to get people in the door. We should see the return of the good sales at all the stores in the next week or so….

#WinGiveaways: Red Envelope, ProFlowers, Personal Creations ($50 Gift Card – 3 Winners!)

So Christmas and Chanukah are over and it is time to think about a little “me time”….and I have a giveaway that is PERFECT for that!

Red Envelope is a fantabulous gift-giving site (or just getting a little something for yourself!).  I ended up buying my young-adult sisters gifts from there this year (a beautiful gemstone bracelet for one, and a simple yet elegant sterling necklace for another).  What I noticed most from the RedEnvelope site is that they seem to specialize in “mommy jewelry”.  I take great pride in wearing my booties on a long chain, and there is no better way to say “Thank you for allowing multiple children to be ripped from your body” than with sterling silver (seriously – I wear those booties as a badge of honor!  We moms get so little credit for the physical stress our bodies go through.  The LEAST we can get is some bling!)

And then there is ProFlowers…Obviously Pro Flowers specializes in  flower creations! Anything you can think of, it seems that it’s there!! If you want to send a “Just Because” bouquet you can search specifically for that type of arrangement (or any other event that you can conceive!).

As for Personal Creations?  Well, I am LOVING the “man cave” line.  Brad (also known as “that Poor Guy Who Has To Deal With Mindi”) gave up 50% of his “man cave” to LEGOs and KNEX many years ago…and his pool table has become a display area for Playmobile.  With this line, he can retake some of his “guy stuff/space”

And now I have a $50 Gift Card to each site to give to give away – one site credit will be given to (3) different people. (note:  the winners will be picked in the following order:  the first to respond will get the Red Envelope, the second will get ProFlowers and the third will get Personal Creations)

To enter to win (each counts as a separate entry, so leave a separate comment!)

1. Leave a comment sharing what item you would select at either RedEnvelope, Personal Creations or Pro Flowers

To increase your chances of winning, there are optional entries available for you, which are:

Organic Grocery Deals: Find Great Prices on Amazon!

People are always shocked when I tell them that I get the best deals on organic grocery/pantry items on Amazon.com.  I’m not sure why…we all know that there are very few coupons for organics and the prices at the supermarket on organics are THROUGH THE ROOF.

So without further ado (what exactly IS an “ado”?), here are some of the organic products that I buy regularly on Amazon.com (as a reminder, Subscribe & Save deals always ship for FREE):

Farmer’s Market Foods Organic Canned Pumpkin, 15-Ounce Cans (Pack of 12): $12 for 12 cans, or $10.20 when you do the “Subscribe & Save” option. That brings it down to $0.85/can. You can’t even get Libby’s for that price!

Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, 15-Ounce Tubs (Pack of 2): $13.54 for a twin pack, or $11.51 when you use Subscribe & Save. FYI: just one of these jars goes for $8 at my local grocery stores!

Coombs Family Farms 100% Pure Organic Maple Syrup Grade B, 32-Ounce Jug: $19.80 or $16.83 with Subscribe & Save. Growing up, my mother ALWAYS used pure maple syrup, while buying us the over-processed “pancake syrup”. Once I was an adult, I switched back to pure maple and I will NEVER go back!

Zoe Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 25.5-Ounce Tins (Pack of 2): $15.40 or $13.09 with Subsrcibe & Save……aside from Coconut Oil, olive oil is my #1 “go to cooking oil” (I can’t remember the last time I used vegetable or canola oil!), but the prices at the store are CRAZY. I once told my mother that all she needed to get me for Christmas was a case of olive oil because I was in SHOCK at the prices. This is a great price for non-organic olive oil, much less organic!

Fireworks Popcorn Savanna Gold Popcorn, 15-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6): $16.43 (not available as a Subscribe & Save option at the time of thise posting). This is my absolute FAVORITE popcorn (especially when popped stovetop using Nutiva Coconut Oil

So those are a few of my favorite organic deals on Amazon…..have you found any organic deals that I missed?

** Please note: like all deals on Amazon.com, this price could change at any moment (usually when the vendor offering it at this price sells out and Amazon defaults to another vendor).**
