Just a reminder that there is still time to help out those suffering in Japan by commenting on this post. I am donating $1 for each comment to Samaritan’s Purse:

I will be closing comments on that post tomorrow night and sending my donation on Friday morning!

Bloggers Unite For Japan Relief: Comment to Donate!

One of the things that I love about blogging is the amazing women that I have met who run blogs similar to mine.  Some people might think that we stay away from each other, as we are all “competing” for the same readers.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  The Frugal Blogger community is made up of some of the nicest, warmest, most generous women I have ever met…and I am proud to call many of them my good friends!

It is because we are all friends that we are able to band together to raise money at a time like this.  The pictures and video that are coming out of Japan are heartbreaking and all but incomprehensible.  It is times like this that make you truly happy for what you have, and want to help those that have lost everything…homes, communities and in far too many cases, loved ones.

How can you help?

PRAY. Pray for the people, pray for the families, pray for the destruction, pray for the lost survivors, pray for those that did not make it…pray.

DONATE. Even donations of $1 to $5 can help. If we all (as readers of Moms Need To Know) gave, we could donate upwards of a hundred thousand dollars! Consider your donation a small amount toward the FREE service you get on MNTK.

Please remember that it is at times like these that the scammers come out of the woodwork, looking to prey on your generosity with bogus charities.  Here are a few charities that I trust:

The American Red Cross: You can make a donation on line.  Or, you can simply text REDCROSS to 90999 and instantly donate $10 to the Japanese relief efforts.

The Salvation Army: You can also donate on-line here as well.  You can also text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 and make an instant donation.

Heart to Heart International: Only 2% of all donations are kept to cover overhead.  That means 98% of what you send to them will actually make it to the quake ravaged areas.

Samaritan’s Purse: This is the company that I will be sending my money toward. I know many bloggers who have worked with them and their lives have been forever affected for the better . Donate HERE.

Let me know if you are planning to donate or pray for this cause. Moms Need To Know will contribute $1 for each comment left below (up to $300) to Samaritans Purse. There are other bloggers who are joining in this relief effort and doing the same thing.  They all agree that we can do something and should if we can.

Your purchase helps build self esteem.
Enter your Dove UPC and select a charity. We’ll donate $1 to inspiring self-esteem programs for girls like these.

So go grab a Dove product out of your stockpile and click here to enter your UPCs!

Wanna know why I am such a big fan of Dove products?  It has nothing to do with the fact that they sent me 3 bottles of body wash (I’ve been using the products for years) and has EVERYTHING to do with them making commericials like this:

My teen years and early-20s were spent never feeling as if I was “pretty enough”.  I wish that there had been commercials like this when I was a kid!

ConAgra Foods Will Donate $10 for Each New Facebook Fan

conagra-facebook-hunger

I usually don’t post things like this, but I spend so much time on Facebook, and am a “real-life” fan of ConAgra foods (makers of Wesson, Pam, Healthy Choice, Swiss Miss and more), and this is the easiest donation you will ever make!

From their current status update:

“Help me fight child hunger. When you become a fan of ConAgra Foods Foundation, they’ll donate $10 to Feeding America – up to $100,000 through Oct. 10th! http://bit.ly/12SV06” Copy this into your status update to help us raise even more for Feeding America!

To me, it’s worth adding them to my Facebook News Feed!

California Tortilla: Freebies on 9/23 (with donation)

california-tortilla

If you are lucky enough to live near a Caalifornia Tortilla (or unlucky enough, if the Queso has had the same effect on your butt as it has on mine), you can get a FREE taco and a FREE t-shirt for as little as a $2 donation!

California Tortilla is partnering with Share Our Strength this Wednesday, September 23rd to help end childhood hunger: if you go to any Cal Tort (except for our airport locations) this Wednesday and make a purchase along with either a $1 or $2 cash donation, here’s what we’ll give you for your generosity:

$1 Cash Donation: A free taco coupon that’s good on your next visit.

$2 Cash Donation: A free taco coupon that’s good on your next visit AND a free tshirt (while supplies last).

It’s a win win for everyone: For $2 you get a great taco, a great shirt and a great feeling and for that same $2 a hungry child can eat for 6 days. Talk about great. (Do you like how I’ve subtly suggested you make the larger donation?)

Free eCards with Easter Seals

easter-seals

One thing I haven’t talked about much on my site is my children (aside from their deep aversion to vegetables)

What I don’t think that I have ever mentioned is that my oldest son is on the Autism Spectrum…PDD-NOS to be precise.  He was diagnosed in 2003 after spending years of him freaking out, being non-verbal  and giving me daily nosebleeds (from head-butting me).

Today he is in 2nd grade and is a well-adjusted (although “quirky”) little guy.

If there is one organization that I can credit with helping him, it is Easter Seals.  Thomas spent two years at their full-day pre-school.  I sent them a child who spoke only in sign laguage…they gave me a child who didn’t scream his head off when I hugged him and wants to play with other children!

So it stands to reason that I will promote Easter Seals whenever I can…and when they sent me an email about their eCards,  I wanted to pass it on.  I don’t know if they derive any revenue  from it, but even if it is just a penny per card, it’s worth it for me to take up space on this site!

(have I tugged at your heartstrings sufficiently yet?)

Click here to send FREE Lily Cards…suitable for Easter, Mothers Day or graduations.

And if you have any wiggle room in your budget, please consider giving to this wonderful organization.  I truly owe my family to them!  I don’t get credit for your donation and will never know about it.  It’s up to you!

Thanks!

Virtual Walk for Breast Cancer

Yesterday I found out that Dorit Shapiro, the President of the Gal to Gal Foundation and long-time friend of my friend Margie lost her fight against Breast Cancer.  I’ve met Dorit at several parties at Margie’s house and, despite living with Stage IV breast cancer for more than 3 years, she remained positive and upbeat.  She leaves behind a husband and 2 children, ages 4 & 8.

This morning Margie forwarded me an email from Dorit that she received before she died, from which comes the following:

Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues

As many of you already know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year is the third anniversary of my diagnosis with stage IV/metastatic breast cancer.  During the month of October, so much of the focus is on prevention and research for a cure; however, nearly 300,000 women each year live with the effects of stage IV/metastatic breast cancer and an unknown future.

Last year, the Gal to Gal Foundation embarked on a ground-breaking fundraising campaign to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The Gal to Gal Foundation sponsored a virtual walk across America, visiting more than 31 cities from Boston to San Francisco.  For a small donation, about the same price as a cup of coffee, participants could create their own virtual walker—and pick their eye color, hair color, and outfit and write why they were supporting the cause.  All proceeds from the walk went directly to charities that support women with stage IV breast cancer and their families, including the fulfillment of their wishes for special vacations or help with medical bills. To date, Gal to Gal has granted nearly $100,000 for the fulfillment of wishes for women with stage IV breast cancer through our partnership with the Making Memories Foundation.  This year we are also teaming up with Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the Young Survival Coalition, sponsoring the Advanced Breast Cancer track for the 9th Annual Conference for Young Women Affected by Breast Cancer.  Our involvement in sponsoring educational programs for women with stage IV breast cancer furthers our mission to help an often overlooked population of women in need of support

(snip)

You can sign up to participate in the virtual walk by visiting: http://www.galtogalwalk.org

This year, my Gal is featured prominently on the home page, walking with celebrities like Larry King, Stephen Covey, Kim Zimmer and Marg Helgenberger.  I hope you will join me in the virtual walk and join “Team Shapirowhen you register.  This year, when you register, you can join a team on the same screen where you type your short story about why you are joining the walk.  I would love for Team Shapiro to be the largest team participating in this year’s walk.  I hope you will join Jeff, Mara, Leah and I as we walk across America to remind the world that there are women and families that live with the effects of breast cancer every day and for whom a cure is not possible

Please feel free to forward this e-mail to any friends and family you feel may be interested in joining the walk.

With Love and Gratitude,
Dorit

I’ve already signed up with Team Shapiro and my walker is named “Mindi”.  Please join me and other women to help raise money for The Gal To Gal Foundation by visiting The Virtual Walk website, choosing your walker and making a donation of $5.
