If you have a clueless boss, you know how frustrating this type of supervisor can make your work environment. He or she seems to constantly be making mistakes and is functionally inadequate with most things. It is very important to know how to deal with this type of boss or else you risk negative repercussions that could hurt your career. Being in charge means they do have some sway....deserved or not.
Step Up
If your boss is not getting it done, see that as an opportunity. Just make sure that the powers that be know that you are the one that took the initiative. If you do not take credit, your incompetent boss might. Then all of your hard work helps him and not yourself. If you are a good leader, your fellow employees are likely going to take your lead. This will lead to a much more pleasant and productive workplace. Try not to undermine the boss, but do what it takes to get the job done.
Suck It Up
Some companies just do not care or realize that their managers and supervisors are incompetent. Often, this is due to the boss being a close relative of the head honcho of the company. When these scenarios are your reality, all you can do is suck it up and start looking for a new job. You should also take full advantage of all sick days, vacation days and other paid time off. Just go about your job until you can safely put your two weeks in.
Support him when it hurts
Your boss may know that he or she is completely clueless on how to do his or her job. This results in significant insecurity. If your boss thinks someone is on his or her side, there is a chance that things may become a little more efficient. As you do this, do not be afraid to gently teach your boss to help him or her out a bit. As you teach, do not criticize. Offer quick tidbits of tips and advice as necessary.
Quit
Sometimes, you just need to leave. You do not want to quit if you are unable to do so financially, but get your plans together and get out of there. There is no need to work for someone who makes more than you for half the work. It is a quick way to kill all morale and enthusiasm you have for your career. When you find a new job, be sure to learn a bit about your new boss before taking the job. You do not want to be that person who gets stuck with two clueless bosses in a row. This may sound impossible, but it definitely does happen and then you will be stuck looking for a new job again.
