As moms, we tend to put everyone else's needs before our own. We wake up and "hit the ground running" with getting the kids ready for school, finding lost shoes, breaking up fights, etc. Once they are off to school, it's time to get the house in order, think about dinner and for many, go to work all day. Then everyone is home again and there are practices, homework, dinner and everything else. At the end of the day, we fall in to bed exhausted, ready to do it all over again.
Through all of that, we often find it impossible to carve out some "me time"...time for us to get our heads straight and take care of our mind AND body. We can end up feeling tired and frazzled. Clearly, this is NOT a good way to live. I know because that is exactly how I was each day. I was staying up until all hours of the night just so that I could have some "me time" after everyone went to bed. This meant that I was tired and cranky in the morning. Then I decided that I needed a new "system", and just one small change has made all the difference!
Recently I started trying to be more of a "morning person". Instead of staying up late to get stuff done and have some "me time", I started setting me alarm for 5:00am, which is at least an hour before my kids get up in the morning. This allows me some quiet time to relax with coffee, check emails or just enjoy the quiet before all the running around of the day. My days have been going so much better ever since I started doing that.
This is just one thing that worked for me. Be sure to check out some more tips that might be a perfect fit for you at Kelloggs.com/GreatStartsTips so you can get off to a Great Start!
In addition to getting my head in the right place and nourishing my mind, it is important to take care of my body with a healthy protein and fiber-packed breakfast. This was another change for me. For years, I lived on just coffee for breakfast!
Starting the day with something as simple as Kellogg's Low Fat Granola over a bowl of low-fat vanilla yogurt or even just a bowl of Special K Protein cereal gives my body what it needs to take on the day. I also find that a high-protein breakfast helps me to stave off hunger pangs for longer.
