Farewell little friend. You will be missed.
You came in to our home with the promises from the boys that they would feed you, change your water, scoop up your poop and take you out to play. As so often happens, that promise faded once the newness of you wore off and you became my responsibility. I grew to like you quite a bit.
I scoured Petco for the perfect toys, the best food and treats. I took you out to play. You were nervous at first, but after a bit you started responding to my voice. You watched me while I did dishes. You reached out to me. You never once peed or pooped on me.
I didn't want to believe that you had died when I found you this morning, but the unmistakable smell told me that you had indeed passed on.
I knew that you would have been happier living a life of freedom, romping on the beach and living among your own kind, but I tried to make your life with us a nice one. I hope it was.
And so I'll say a little prayer for you at your funeral

Poor Hermie 🙂

Sorry for your loss!
Peace
Mindi
oh my gosh - I must have not written that very well. I thought that the ":::flush:::" was an indication of my "adios amigos" attitude about this crab
It's a hermit crab. It's dead. I still have another one in the cage that will.not.die
If you were to ask the boys their names, they wouldn't remember.
It's a shame when anything dies, but this is no great loss 😉
But thanks for the well wishes 🙂

Aww..what a sweet post 🙂 We were pretty devastated when one of our fish died a few years back. I had no idea hermit crabs lived that long!

LOL, caught the flush Mindi...you slay me.

We too have killed off a few hermit crabs. I was shocked when I learned from a guy at Petco that with proper care they can live up to 15 years. Guess we weren't providing proper care..I think ours lasted about 6 months. We had a little funeral and buried the last one in a Band-aid box in the flower bed. My daughters mourned for at least 10 minutes.
