Why I Love Acme: Coupon Fraud Edition

    by Mindi Cherry

    FacebookPinEmail

Most of you know my deep love of Acme.  Between the wonderful coupon policy, the fantabulous sales and the fact that my local store is filled with the nicest employees, I rarely shop anywhere else!

Diane found me on Facebook a few minutes ago and sent me this link to a story in the Pottstown Mercury today.

Not only am I thrilled that a coupon counterfeiter was brought to justice, but I am ecstatic that it was the employees at my local Acme that helped to do it!

I can not WAIT to go in to my Acme to get my early edition of the next circular (they always have it waiting for me) and give the employees a big THANKS!

Way to go Acme....my love for you just increased...and I didn't think that was possible!

Honestly, if this guy just followed your blog, Mindi, he could be getting plenty of groceries free or cheap *legally*. And yes, I love Acme's wonderful cat deals ... which helped me get a free grill pan recently (and steaks to grill on it!).

I have a deep hatred for Acme. The one in my town is full of idiots and even in the next town over. I find their prices to jacked up ridiculously high. Before I got into coupons I did the same order at an acme and a giant and the giant was significantly lower. I dont mean the way they do them at the stores where they only shop their own sale add to make the cart display thing. I mean I shopped the things I always buy. I need to follow your blog better and get better with the coupons to see if I can change my mind on the acme. But the one in avondale is suspicious of coupons(VERY SUSPICIOUS)If you pull out more than 6 coupons the managers are standing over you, not to help you I might add.
The one in Oxford is so small, they ahve no self checkout and are usually out of all sale items 5 minutes into the sale.

Thanks for the story! I love ACME as well! I go to the ACME in Eagle and the ladies at the self check line are sooo nice! They are always excited to see how much I save with all the coupons and always say "hi" to me when they see me in the store. I agree, ACME has the best sales and the nicest employees!!!

Did you read the comments on the article you linked? One of them only criticized the guy for not thinking big enough; the commenter said the "haul" has to be worth the risk of being locked up, and I guess only ripping off stores for $4000 is just not worth it. Another one said she doesn't even bother to clip the legal coupons, so going to all the work of making counterfeit ones sounds like too much work to her. After reading about all of your horrible troubles recently and some of the other things that are going on lately (like the people getting the free Purex and chimichangas so they can resell them at their mini-marts or whatever, or copying the Quaker coupons so those of us who are using legit coupons can't use them, and so on and on) I'm starting to wonder if anyone in this country has a moral compass anymore. Why didn't those commenters just think what he did was wrong, not that it was too much work or that it's not a big enough payoff but just simply WRONG. Even though I have NEVER knowingly used a coupon in anything other than the way it was intended and never would (let alone use a fraudulent coupon), and I am also not one of these people who will go and take as much of something as I can possibly get just because it's free, I'm starting to be so ashamed of being a couponer, just because there are too many out there who are unethical and using coupons essentially to rip off stores and manufacturers. It makes me feel sort of disgusted with myself. I always wonder if pursuing some deal is going to turn me into one of them.

Anyway, I know you're not like that, and I sincerely appreciate you for that. But things are just getting out of hand.

I felt a bit like Julie recently. I went to Publix and Target and got 75.00 dollars worth of items for 2.00. I felt terrible about it, even though I followed all the coupon policies. But the Target employees seemed upset that I bought several items for .70 cents, but maybe it was because I had to explain their coupon policy to them at checkout. Should I be feeling this bad, even if I use the coupons properly, legally, and according to the store policy?

If you are using the coupons legally and within the guidelines of the store policy, there is nothing to feel bad about!

Don't forget that the store is getting reimbursed by the various manufacturers for those coupons!

I left you a comment on facebook before asking about using a ($1 off 2 items) coupon with (2 $1 off 1 item). I thought that this was fine and "legal" couponing, but my local acme recently told me I couldn't use them together...even though I've always used them together in the past.

To Cassie - I would take that as needing to buy 3 items to use the 2 coupons. This is all amazing to read & consider.

I am new to couponing & although I haven't received a pile of groceries for next to nothing, I have done well enough to have the cashiers comment.

But, last night, at TOYRUS w/ the Hasbro deal, a cashier told me that I could use multiple coupons for one item during a transaction as long as that item was in my purchase. That, in my opinion, would be "using the system" and not legal. I thanked her for the information, but was happy as could be with the couponed discount, the sale, the gift card & the rebate!! Anything more than that is just plain greedy. :S
