Reminder: Angel Food Ministries deadline approaching

    by Mindi Cherry

I've written about Angel Food Ministries before, but wanted to give you a reminder in case you have yet to try them or you are new to this site and haven't yet gone through every single word that I have ever written in all of that free time I hear that we moms have (especially us stay-at-home moms who have the easy life of just playing with our children while other people do, you know..."actual work".  Seriously - the next time someone says that to me, I'm going to pop them one!).

Simply put, Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization where you can go and get enough food to help feed a family of 4 for a week for only $30 (cash or food stamps; no credit cards).  The estimated retail value of each box is $60 and you do have the ability to add on other packages (more produce, more meat, etc).  Their service is available to everyone, regardless of income.

Box pickups are once a month.  Orders are taken at the beginning of each month, with pickup being towards the end of the month.  Check with your local pickup site for exact dates.  The deadline for May orders is approaching at most locations.  If you have yet to try Angel Food Ministries, the May box looks like a good place to start.

Included in the $30 Signature box this month:

    •
      • 2.5 lb. Lean Chopped Beef Steaks (5 x 8 oz.)
      • 5 lb. Leg Quarters
      • 2 lb. Chicken and Corn Bread Stuffing Casserole (Ready to Cook)
      • 28 oz. Salisbury Steak Dinner Entrée
      • 1 lb. Boneless Pork Chops (4 x 4 oz.)
      • 1 lb. Corn Dogs (6 ct.)
      • 12 oz. Deli Sliced Ham
      • 5 oz. Chunk Light Tuna in Water
      • 32 oz. French Fries
      • 1 lb. Sweet Corn
      • 15 oz. Musselman’s Apple Sauce
      • 15 oz. Pears (Product of U.S.A.)
      • 8 oz. Dinner Roll Mix (Makes 8 Nice Rolls)
      • 7.5 oz. Mac ’n Cheese
      • 32 oz. 2% Shelf Stable Milk
      • Dozen Eggs
      • Dessert

There are plenty of other boxes available, including 2 different produce boxes, a 5 lb + Fajita Kit, an Assorted Meat kit and more.

Need some help deciding what to do with your Angel Food Boxes?  Here's some links:

DeAna at Balancing Act Basics has her Once a Month Cooking menu using the May boxes on her site! (although I'm trying to figure out which boxes she ordered...I'm guessing the Signature box, Latin Flavors produce and the Fajita Box)

Hillbilly Housewife should have her May Menu and Shopping List  up fairly soon!

As for me, I think I am finally going to give them a try...for a few reasons:

    1.  The curiosity is killing me

    2.  I keep telling people how great the service is and figured I should stop taking the word of everyone else and try it myself.

    3.  I have actually heard that the more people that they have, the more able they are to continue the service.

Have you used Angel Food Ministries or do you know of any other sites that provide menus based on their boxes each month?  Post it in the comments!

This looks very cool. I may have to try it out in the next few months. We have been doing the Share Food Network for the past 4 or 5 months, which is similar to this. It's about $40 of food for $19, plus 2 hours of community service a month. We've been enjoying the things that we get and being creative with our bags of food. Check it out, it might be in your area: http://sharefoodprogram.org/

I have ordered the last few months and have always been pleased. The steaks are amazing. I have used some recipes from the Hillbilly Housewife site. I have to say before Angel food I always used minute rice and the only dry beans I used was split pea so that was an adventure lol. A couple of my friends also order and we get together once a week to make a meal for our families it is always fun trying to match what you get in the box to a new recipe. Hope you enjoy it.

I got the box in March and we were pleased. I meant to buy an April one but missed the deadline. We ate most of the box up already. I think it helps to have spices on hand to add to certain items (ex. spaghetti sauce) but overall, was very pleased. I've recommended them to most of my family members, but most especially to two particular families who are struggling. They both plan on ordering this month!

I have purchased food from AFM. The steaks are wonderful and all of the food we've gotten has been great. It's worth the money and more. If you haven't tried it I would suggest you do you won't be sorry. We only purchase the boxes that include the food we eat and sometimes we swap with other families if we don't care for a certain item!

      Enjoy!
