How To Make Your Own Brown Sugar

    by Mindi Cherry

Making your own brown sugar is really quick and easy, will save space in your cabinets. Instead of keeping white sugar, light brown sugar AND dark brown sugar in your cabinets , you simply need some white sugar and some molasses!

Have you ever been baking and when you went to grab your brown sugar, found that it had turned in to a hard block because somehow it had been exposed to air? Sure - people say that you can just microwave it to soften it, but I have never really had good luck with that.

Making your own brown sugar is really quick and easy, will save space in your cabinets. Instead of keeping white sugar, light brown sugar AND dark brown sugar in your cabinets (and wondering if the brown sugars will be a rock when you go to use them), you simply need some white sugar and some molasses!

I did the math based on the prices at my local Wegmans and, using store-brand sugars and there is a slight savings by making it yourself...not much - about a few pennies per cup. But it might save you money because you aren't throwing away "bad" brown sugar.

This ratio will make 1 cup of light brown sugar. If your recipe calls for dark brown sugar, simply increase the amount of molasses to 1 1/2 Tbsp per cup of white sugar.

Anyway - making it is simple. You just need:

    • 1 cup white sugar
    • 1 Tbsp molasses

    Making it is easy!

    1. Combine ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse until well blended.
    2. Store remaining brown sugar in an airtight container.
