Throwing a Barbecue On a Budget

Throwing a summer barbecue is a great way to spend time with friends and family. A summer barbecue is also an easy way to go way over your grocery budget!

    1. Carefully Consider the Menu - It usually goes without saying that meat will be on then menu at any barbecue. However, you don't have to serve New York Steak. There are plenty of other grilling options that are much more affordable. If you want to serve steak consider a London Broil. You can typically pick up a London Broil steak for under $5. Just make sure to tenderize the meat and use a good marinade. You could also opt for hot dogs and hamburgers which are very affordable!  Just watch the sales because hot dogs will go on sale Buy One Get One Free all the time!

Tip: Find meat that is on clearance and use coupons to purchase marinades and other condiments.

    2. Take people up on their offer to bring something - When you invite people over for anything, most will ask "What can I bring?". Take them up on their offer! Ask them to bring an inexpensive side dish like a pasta salad, bean salad, etc (just don't ask them to make a specific recipe - give them a general guideline such as "being a side dish", etc and be happy and grateful for whatever they decide to make). Not only will you save some money, but it will also give you more time to enjoy your party. Just don't forget to make the same offer when you get an invite!

    3. Plan Kid Friendly Games - If children will be attending your barbecue make sure you have stuff to entertain them. You can purchase footballs, frisbee's, water balloons and bubbles at the dollar store! There is no need to spend a lot of money on expensive entertainment. Having items like this on hand will keep the kids happy and allow the adults to enjoy some grown-up time.

    4. Drinks on a Budget - Anytime you are throwing a barbecue you will want to consider if you are going to serve adult beverages. Serving alcohol can really throw your budget out of whack, so take some time to think about this. You can do one of two things. Have you guests bring a six back of beer or a bottle of wine. If you would prefer not to ask your guests to bring their own alcohol that is also fine. If you decide to purchase alcohol check to see if your local grocery store is having any promotions on wine.

If children will be attending the party, skip expensive juice boxes! Kids will drink these as fast as they open them. Mix up a few pitchers of frozen or fresh juice before the party. Not only will your juice taste better but it is a lot more affordable.

What are your best tips for saving money when you have a barbecue?

This are some awesome tips, especially taking up friends offers to show up with something...I should probably do it more often! I think in addition to the above, you can also make your own rubs and barbecue sauces at home...easy, cheap and fun 🙂 thanks for sharing
