I admit that I am ReallyReallySmallPotatoes in the frugal blogging world.
And so, I've been waiting for one of the BiggerNames (the ones with more than 12 people on their Feedburner stats) to bring this up. I've been reading the BiggerNames for quite some time and considering how much ice cream my IncrediblySvelte husband goes through, it would have been something that I noticed being mentioned. But I haven't seen it, so I'm going to do so.
Has nobody else noticed that both Breyers and Edy's ice cream containers have shrunk by .5 Qt/16oz while the price has remained the same? I understand the reasoning behind it (on the part of Breyers and Edy's)...they don't want to raise prices so they reduce the size of the container and hope that nobody notices.
Well I noticed.
Perhaps it took me a few weeks...like so many who are trying to save money and have a chest freezer, I spot a good deal on ice cream, I stock up and then don't think about it again until my husband says "ummm....did you get any free ice cream lately?" (I actually don't like ice cream, so I need to rely on Brad to give the advance notice that we are reaching a critical stage with it)
So it was off to the grocery store I go, in search of the cheapest palatable ice cream I could find (I'm blessed with not having 4 ice-cream-snobs in my house...as long as it has oreos or cookie dough in it - they're Golden!). Grabbed it out of the supermarket freezer while shoving gummie bears in my daughter's mouth and went on my merry way.
Then I went to put it in our freezer at home and noticed how much less room it took up....and I felt deceived.
you see, for years I have been a connoisseur of ice cream sales. I knew the regular price of each ice cream and knew when looking at an ad, what was a good deal and what was just "so-so".. So when I see Edy's at 3/$8 I think "great deal!"
But is it a great deal when there is 25% less ice cream in the container? In my 39 years, ice cream has ALWAYS come in half-gallon cartons. Period. The End.(yes - there are the pint containers, but aside from the Cherry-Garcia-pregnancy-cravings and the BOGO deals WITH a coupon, we stick to the traditional ½ gallon deals). How can I determine if it is a good deal at 3/$8 when Edy's and Breyers are one size and Turkey Hill and Greene's and store brands are another size.
Have you noticed any other size reductions?

I too, have noticed it but as the one time I was paying attention it was on a "loaded" container, I figured it was an extra packed container and that it was one of those" by weight not by volume" kinds of things. I have far too much faith in the industry and people in general to have realized that we were actually getting gypped! What do people do now that they've snuck this change in out from under us all?
