Almost Wordless Wednesday: We Have a Runner!

My daughter left the cage open last night.

Anyone have any ideas on how to find a hamster in the house?

I remember our class hamster getting out a few times in 5th grade. Once they found him in the library and a few times he just came back on his own….he was hungry & thirsty! Good luck, this is a great reason for my daughter not to have a hamster!!!

Oh no! My family once had two mice escape from their cage. We always thought they were both male, until one day we found them + 9 more baby mice! –all hiding out in one of the closets.

Ours always went under the dryer where it’s warm and dark. Good luck!

Not to be morbid, but this happened to us…If you have a sump pump, make sure it’s covered. Our hamster was kept in the basement and the next day we had a floater.

According to my sons classroom hamster book, you are supposed to put a bucket that has some nesting material and food on the floor with a way for the hamster to climb up to it. He will smell the food and climb on in, unable to get back out. Good luck!

  6. Melissa says:

Put out some empty toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls on the floor. Newspapers. They love to play with that stuff.

A cat! and this is from experience.

  8. Tracy says:

Try putting a couple of peanut butter crackers (or plain peanut butter) at the door of a couple of rooms. Just on a paper towel. Normally the smell of peanut butter draws them out pretty quickly!

I agree with putting food out. We used to have a hamster who would climb out and steal all the cat food. He would gather it and store it behind the shelf his cage was on top of. The cat would just watch him run up and down the stairs all night on his food stealing mission. In the morning we would just call him (as if he were a cat or dog) and he would come out to us to be put back in his cage. He was a weird little creature! Good Luck!!

Get a live mouse trap. It’s a spring-loaded door that shouts once they go inside to get the food. You can get it at pet supply shops or Lowes/Home Depot usually.

Yikes. Good luck with that. My sis-in-law had a missing hamster once that turned up (dead) months later in the sleeve of her winter coat. Eww.

  12. Stella says:

We had a hamster–plus a dog and two cats. How that thing survived more than a month is beyond me! One time it escaped and we were looking all over the house for it. I noticed one of the cats sitting by the sliding glass door, transfixed. I followed her eyes and there was the hamster. He’d managed to climb up the curtains and perch himself atop the rod.

That’s one way to keep out of harm’s (the cats) way…

My family has had several escaping hamsters. Sump pump was a pretty common place to find them. Shoes were another place. Otherwise, remember that they are NOCTURNAL. Put a little treat out someplace when its dark (peanut butter works great) in a place that you’ll be able to see the monster and you’ll catch it in no time!! Good luck!!

Try putting his cage on the floor with the door open to see if he comes back. This used to work for one of my son’s teachers. Also look to see if he has set up a second home. Our hamster escaped to the closet so we knew where to look for him.

Oh my! I feel for you. We lost a hamster when I was a kid and it went down the heater vent (yes, they can squeeze through them). If you start smelling a terrible smell, I’m afraid, you found them! You can always check the low sports in the heating vents to see if that is the case! Best of luck!

  16. Kathleen says:

The last one I had (and lost) got in the furnace duct….I was lucky and found it and was able to get it out from the duct on the lower level (basement ;) of the house. No more hamsters for me! My suggestion if you do not find the one you are missing (I hope you do though) is a Zhu-Zhu Pet! Good luck!

My boyfriend used to be an exterminator. Small animals travel along the walls. Put the cage with the door open on the wall close to where he/she escaped. My sister’s hampster escaped that night she put the cage on the wall with the door open & in the morning the hampster was back in his cage. Try doing it at night since they are nocturnal. If that doesn’t work, you can try an exterminator. They should be able to find your pet. Good luck & please post any updates.

Our hamster got out a few months ago. We put a couple pieces of lettuce in the middle of every room and shut all the doors. Then I got up in the middle of the night and checked the rooms. The one with the missing lettuce is where you’ll find your hamster. Ours was hiding in the closet where he’s stockpiled a bunch of dog food!

  20. Brianna says:

Ours always seemed to end up under the fridge. I remember waiting until nighttime and getting down with the flashlight to find them. I agree with all who said to try peanut butter, it works great! We had so many hamsters escape over the years but always found them (alive!) if that is any encouragement to you!
