Thieves essential oil is said to come from four thieves from Europe. They used cloves, rosemary and other aromatics to protect themselves from the deadly black plague while they robbed the victims of the disease. When the thieves were caught, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. (source)
