4 Surprising Health Benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil

As we continue to learn about essential oils, it is time to move on to one of my favorites - Cedarwood Oil!  Cedarwood Essential Oil is extracted via steam distillation from Cedar wood chips. Cedar is a tree found in colder regions and at higher elevations and has long been used for its health benefits.

Here are four surprising health benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil.

    The Antiseptic Benefit

Cedarwood Essential Oil is a natural antiseptic and can be used in creams and be applied to wounds, scraps, burns, and other minor first aid injuries (Lavender oil is also good for this!). Cedarwood Essential Oil has been shown to protect against tetanus too! You can diffuse it as well to help with internal ailments and help rid the body of harmful toxins.

    The Anti-Inflammatory Benefit

Cedarwood Essential Oil is great to use when the pain of arthritis and painful joints start to flare up. Add a few drops to a carrier oil like jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, or grapeseed (learn more about picking and using carrier oils). Massage this into the areas affected by the inflammation flareup. It can also be used in the diffuser when your whole body just hurts and you need relief.

Getting Started With Essential Oils and Where To Buy Them

    The Tonic Benefit

A good tonic made with Cedarwood Essential Oil can stimulate your metabolism and help with your overall digestive system. It increases healthy functions of both the liver and kidney, helping to rid the body of toxins that have built up. You can also make a topical tonic to tighten skin and tone muscles. Make sure to test it on a small part of your skin first as people can be sensitive to Cedarwood Essential Oil when used topical or ingested (if you choose to do that).

    The Sedative Benefit

One of the best benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil is as a sedative. Cedarwood calms the mind and soothes you into a peaceful, restful sleep. Diffuse Cedarwood Essential Oil an hour or so before bedtime or anytime that your stress and anxiety levels are on overdrive. It is awesome in helping to get rid of that horrible nighttime friend, insomnia.
