Oh - this biscuits and sausage gravy recipe is one of my all-time favorite breakfasts and I don't have it nearly as often as I would like to have it!

Oh - this biscuits and sausage gravy recipe is one of my all-time favorite breakfasts and I don't have it nearly as often as I would like to have it!

Oh - this is one of my all-time favorite breakfasts and I don't have it nearly as often as I would like to have it! My family is originally from Indiana, so we would have this fairly often when I was young. After a while, my mom started not making it as often (because it isn't really that healthy - but oh boy, is it good!) and it became more of a treat than anything else.

This is seriously one of my "comfort foods" now. I mean - my children like my Crockpot Breakfast Casserole Recipe and they especially like my French Toast Rollups with Strawberry and Cream Cheese, but if it is my turn to pick a weekend breakfast, this is what I want. I don't even need much of it...just 1 biscuit with a scoop of sausage gravy on it and I am a happy girl!

Biscuits and Sausage Gravy Recipe - A Comfort Food Classic sq

I think that one reason I like travelling back to Indiana to see family is because we almost always stay at a hotel with a buffet breakfast and you can pretty much count on sausage gravy and biscuits being on the menu in the Midwest and the South! Funny thing - it's usually not even that good when it is on the hotel buffets! It's time for me to start making it more often at home. After all, I know that Brad loves it and even my oldest son loves it. It's not as if it is going to go to waste!

Before we get to the recipe, I am going to give you one little secret to the BEST sausage gravy and biscuits that you will ever taste: grape jelly! Not grape jelly in the gravy, but grape jelly on the biscuits (especially if they are homemade biscuits) before you put the gravy on top. I know it sounds strange, but it is absolutely fabulous. This is how my dad taught me to eat them. This is how everyone in my family eats them. This is how you should be eating them! Trust me - just try it!

Keep in mind that whatever sausage you pick will greatly affect the flavor of your sausage gravy recipe. If you get a traditional mild breakfast sausage roll, you will have a mild gravy. If you get one of the hot & spicy sausages, you will have a spicy gravy. Of course, I don't mind having a really spicy gravy - the grape jelly balances it out quite nicely!

To make this easy sausage biscuits and gravy recipe, you will need:

    sausage gravy recipe ingredients

    • 8-10 Biscuits (store bought or make your own homemade biscuits)
    • 1 lb pork sausage roll (or links, with the casing removed)
    • ¼ cup Flour
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1 tablespoon Butter
    • Salt & Pepper to taste

    Prep Time: 5 minutes minutes
    Cook Time: 15 minutes minutes
    Total Time: 20 minutes minutes
    Servings: 8
    Author: Mindi

    Ingredients

    • 8-10 Biscuits of your choice I like classic buttermilk biscuits
    • 1 lb pork sausage roll or links, with the casing removed
    • ¼ cup Flour
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1 tablespoon Butter
    • Salt & Pepper to taste

    Instructions

    • Prepare your favorite biscuits according to their recipe or package directions.
    • In a large skillet, cook sausage, breaking it up in to bite size pieces as it cooks.
    • Remove sausage from pan, leaving at least 4 – 5 tablespoon grease in the pan. DO NOT discard the grease!
    • Add butter to the grease (more if you used very lean sausage and don’t have enough grease from the meat)
    • Add flour to drippings and butter. Whisk until all lumps are gone and the mixture is smooth.
    • Cook flour/butter/grease mixture, whisking constantly, for about 2 minutes (this “cooks” the flour so that you won’t taste the flour in the gravy)
    • Slowly add milk, stirring constantly until proper consistency is reached.
    • Return sausage to the gravy mixture and cook for another few minutes until heated through. If the gravy seems too thick, add a little more milk.
    • Add Salt and pepper to taste.
    • Serve gravy over biscuits.

Funny, with the grape jelly. I have ALWAYS used strawberry jam and get the most unusual looks, but it sure tastes great!

The secret to "perfect" sausage? Using a chub of sausage, slice the sausage and fry the slices, remove from pan and shred with fork. I do not know why this makes the gravy tastier but I have tried browning the crumbled sausage and it is not as tasty!
